Commercial Description:
In German, Munich is "Munchen", or "place of the monks." While Belgium is now better known for monastic brewing, many of Germany's great breweries have monastic origins. During the forty days of Lent leading up to Easter, the monks fasted, allowing themselves no solid food. They developed doppelbock, a beer style solid enough to get them through their fasting period. Names for German doppelbocks always use the suffix "-ator", so we've followed suit. Brooklynator Doppelbock is brewed in the classic style, often referred to as "liquid bread." It's brewed from 100% German malts and hops and fermented cold with a Bavarian lager yeast. It has a bready, toffee-like aroma, crisp, moderate bitterness, a silky slightly sweet center and a long bready finish. The monks fasted, but you don't have to. Brooklynator Doppelbock is great with pork dishes, venison, duck, sausages, earthy beans, mushrooms, and full-flavored cheeses.

Sampled on tap at Great Lost Bear. Pours a clear brown color with a ring of light brown lace. Aroma of fruits and malt, there’s also a little something weird and unpleasant. Flavor of fruits, chocolate and malt. The body is light with an oily texture and moderate carbonation.

Growler - pours a dark reddish brown, with an off-white head that shrinks fast - big, inviting, authentic, super-malty aroma, with notes of roasted nuts, bready malt, caramel, brown sugar, cherry and other standard doppel lager fruitiness - smooth, creamy mouthfeel, but the body is thinner than I was expecting (and hoping) - caramelized sugar and dark fruit sweetness mingles with some alcohol heat and slight spicy character to give the beer an overall warming sensation - very mild hops in the background - a bit of toffee and bready character, as well as some nuttiness - the somewhat thin body in the finish makes the alcohol a lot more apparent than it should be, but overall this is a fairly solid doppel, and one that could hold up next to quite a few of the German examples.

Tap at Blind Tiger: Brown pour with a ruby hue and a small, but dense tan head. Nose has some dark Belgian malt, and a light sweet fruitiness of raisins and dates. The body has a decent, creamy texture. Flavor has an odd metallic zing with a sweet fruity note of raisins and dates. Light roast comes through from some dark Belgian malts. Decent, but one-dimensional.

Growler filled at Bellport Beer and Soda. Pours a clear red with a very thin soapy head that disappeared after the first sip. Pleasant aroma of malt with some bready notes detected as well. The flavor is a bit on the sweet side with malt being the main component and some brown sugar, bread and even some very light smoke present. No bitterness to speak of at the finish, but there is an alcohol flavor that emerges near the end. I was surprised the abv was only 7.5% because it feels like more in this beer. The body is a bit on the thin side. Still, a decent doppelbock.

Draft - RFD. Dark orangey brown, light tan creamy head. Nose held notes of sweet caramel raisin and cherry. Warming brings out soft earthed doughy-like notes. Cherry caramel malt flavors balance on lighter notes of bread, and just a hint of smoke. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, drying, malty finish. Nice brew...
