Inspired by Philadelphia’s rich brewing heritage, this year’s collaborative brew is a lager that was brewed using the Schmidt’s yeast strain. With the malt bill being formulated by Bill Covaleski of Victory and John Trogner of Troegs, and the hopping rates being formulated by Tom Kehoe of Yards and Gordon Grubb of Nodding Head, you should expect nothing short of pure brilliance from this brew. Fizzy, yellow beer? Maybe but certainly not your grandfather’s lager!

Draft at DRE. Poured medium golden with 1-fingr white head. Nose was pale malt, citric hops, some fruit and honey. Tasted very fruity, with a nice hoppy and pale malty balance. This is one of the better pale lagers I have ever had.

On tap at Capone’s, our first stop on the RBSG bus. Pours a clear gold with a thin white head. Clean sweet grain, toast and light wheat. Medium bodied, crisp grain, clean and cool. Toast, simple, with an earthy bitterness. Nice lawnmower beer.

This poured a bright yellow clor a little lighter than gold with a white head. Aroma was of dusty and grassy hops and pale malt. Flavor was much better than expected given the description. Hops just under the threshold for a pilsner maybe, and the schlitz yeast I was expecting to be bad but turned out surprisingly palatable.

In short: A clean and moderately hoppy blonde lager. Basic decent session beer.
How: Tap at Capones PA, first RBSG 2011 bus-trip pit-stop
The look: Clear yellow-blonde body topped by a small white head
In long: Typical clean lager nose with light grassy notes. Taste is fresh cereals, some refreshing tropical fruits, a light tartness, some dry grassy hops with a light spicy twist. A straightforward session Premier Lager that could pass as a Kellerbier. I drank this one during our first pit-stop of the RBSG 2011 bus trip after drinking a bunch of beers in the bus. I was already drunk and it was only 11am, does that make me a drunk or just totally awesome? I vote for totally awesome

Hazy golden color with a small, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malts, floral hops, citrus fruits, and toffee. Taste of toffee malts, some toast, a bit of pine, citrus, and a sweeter, almost corny, finish. Nothing too special, hoping for a nice Keller Pils one year.
