GoufCustom (773) - HONG KONG - APR 19, 2014

500 ml bottle as “Brothers Premium Apple Cider” bought at YATA in Grand Centry Place, Mong Kok.

Clear amber honey colour; Razor-thin head and residual soapy white foam which fades in 10 seconds; Almost no lacing with very fizzy carbonation; Quite fragrant and musty aroma of apple wine, with strong tartness, wood and strong tannic; Medium sweet taste of apple wine, with potent alcohol, strong tannic, sugar, strong cellar musty, light yoghurt tartness and light wood; Light body. Watery palate; Mouth feel is quite sweet and notable alcohol, with quite strong tannic, barrel and cellar-like palate. Light tartness; Watery but quite winey feel. Not bad… Slightly dry after taste. Sweet and quite boozy to mouth.

Comments: This one is a bit too watery, not so dry, and no bittersweet as advertised, but otherwise it has good cellar and woody aroma and taste, some good booze and sweetiness to boost. A bit macro-ish, but an easy one to enjoy.

500ml bottle (Drink Baar, Tallinn)
Sweet fake cider aroma. Super sweet fake (alcopop) cider taste. Watery and fizzy. Interesting bite clearly from citric acid rather than real apples. Sweet finish. All ciders should by law have an apple juice percentage content listed, and nothing under 80% should be forbidden from using the term. I’m pretty sure this is applewine at 10+% diluted with 50% water, and then with sugar, citric acid, and CO2 added. However, they’ve got the drinkability well worked out, so giving it more points for guilty pleasure, even though it’s fizzy nonsense.

ALLOVATE (2356) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAY 28, 2013
Rather astounding deep amber pour; bright as bright with high effervescence. Apples; peel, core and all on the nose - a little orchard roughage and earthy notes in there too. Softly spoken on the palate. Light bodied and subtle. Red apple flavours; a continuation of the nose - earthy and fresh with a good lot of strawberry coming through. Drops off crisp but is residually sweet. Deadly sessionable. I can’t argue!! (50cL, BB 20/09/13, Thirsty Camel, Butler)
