TheBeerLover (1013), DC Metro Area, USA Jan 28, 2006 Black Douglas pours to a deep ruby red/brown color with a creamy white head and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is just packed with big malty aromas. Aromas of toffee, bittersweet chocolate, and caramel flood the nose. The palate is rich and full on the tongue with a hefty body. Flavors of sweet malt, toffee, burnt currants, and bitter sweet chocolate coat the tongue. Black Douglas finishes very sweet and malty up front, a touch warm and soothing, and then ends with just enough hop bitterness so it is not too cloying.
This is a wonderfully malt accented brew, and a classic example of Scottish ale. This beer is very flavorful and delicious, and is the perfect beer to sip and savor as an after dinner drink or a night cap. It would also make a great desert beer, and would work well with rich, chocolate deserts. mynameisjonas (206), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Apr 6, 2006 nice thick beer from my ancestors. good flavor. highly recommended. good scottish beer Libeerian (208), Garner, North Carolina, USA Dec 2, 2003 My favorite from Broughton. I love the flavors and aromas from the dark malts, especially the hint of smoke. Great complexity. Zach Diesel (907), Portland, Oregon, USA May 7, 2001 Damn good. Slight choclate taste on the palate. Looked awesome and tasted awesome. austinpowers (2828), New York, New York, USA May 16, 2003 Broughton is one of the few British micros that really gets it right time and again. The bottle-conditioned Black Douglas, though not as terrific as Old Jock Ale, features robust crystal malt flavors (but no roastiness). Reminiscent of a Strong Suffolk or Welsh ESB, this is a smooth sipper with winey touches and wisps of sourness. Moderately sweet, it's a pleasure to imbibe.
