Black Douglas was a famous Scottish Knight and trusted friend of Robert the Bruce. The Bruce and Black Douglas first met only a few miles from the site of Broughton Ales in the Scottish Borders.
We like to think that the dark ruby colour and the full bodied malt flavour of this ale reflect the power and strength of this great Knight.
Major ingredients are:-
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malt and Black Malt. Hops used are English grown Challenger, and First Gold

Dark Bottle, Scotland. Pours dark ruby, caramel with medium head. Scent is clearly Rye, which I am personally a fan of. Taste is fresh, light, slightly citrus. Mouthfeel is clean, inviting. Good.

50 cl bottle, 5.2%, 2.90€ - EDB - Scotland.

Deep ruby red color, light beige bubbly head, winey nose. Roasted malt, with sublte caramel and cookies notes, bittering hops. Taste is bitter, simple. Medium body, carbonated, sourish dry finish. Good yet not outstanding ESB.

Bottle from co op. Thin brown head. Looks like flat coca cola, smells a bit like it too. Malty taste like whisky going down.

500ml bottle from the Co-Op in Brodick, Arran. Pours clear, dark red with a foamy head which dies down to leave nice lacing and a small off white head, Tastes of creamy dark fruits and a bit of dark pepper. Strangely then takes a turn to the hoppy side before finishing up creamy sweet. An absolute delight in a glass.

Bottle from Vino Wines. Hazy ruby body with a medium beige head. No visible carbonation. Excellent lacing. Aroma of black currant, bramble jelly and stewed tea. Flavour of salted caramel, earth, treacle and a light, peppery finish. Thin body with an oily texture. Light fizz. A tasty Bitter.

Clear brown / dark ruby. Foamy and persistent beige head. Sweet aroma of cherries, red grapes, caramel, sweet malt and fruit cake. Taste is fruity and sweetly refreshing, like Waldorf salad.

500ml bottle. Dark, almost black ale but with a slight reddish hue. This is a terrific dark ale with a lovely dry finish. Smooth on the palate and well balanced in terms of flavour. I will definitely buy this one again.

Pours a light brown color, completely clear, with some reddish undertone. About two fingers of white head quickly settles to just a miniature brim around the edge. The aroma is extremely pleasant - chocolatey smell is complemented by some roasted malts and just a little coffee. The creamy taste has the initial bitter kick, but is followed by moderate bitterness and some roastiness as well. There is another bitter kick in the finish.

(Bottle). Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. The taste is malty with a hint of slightly sweet caramel. The taste is quite thin, a bit watery.
