COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle; Pasteurised.
NOTE: The Cask version has a separate listing.
Black Douglas was a famous Scottish Knight and trusted friend of Robert the Bruce. The Bruce and Black Douglas first met only a few miles from the site of Broughton Ales in the Scottish Borders.
We like to think that the dark ruby colour and the full bodied malt flavour of this ale reflect the power and strength of this great Knight.
Major ingredients are:-
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malt and Black Malt. Hops used are English grown Challenger, and First Gold

500ml bottle picked up at Luvians I St Andrews. Malt-accented beer with a creamy, off-white head resting over a ruby dark body. Smell of bready malts. Flavoured by malt with nuances of dark fruits, ending with bittersweet notes. Soft carbonated [30.10.2008].

Smak och doft av choklad, torkad frukt, sirap, soja, fikon. Mycket sötma med en fadd och bitter beska.

Bottled, 0.50l. Clear dark ruby color with mid-sized thick tan-like head. Aroma of caramel malt, mild coffee and chocolate, floral hops and plums. Taste starts with sweet caramel, then followed by light roastiness with some chocolate notes. Mouthfeel is syrupy, while aftertaste resembles dark chocolate bitterness. Full body, sticky texture and soft carbonation in palate. That’s the reason for liking knights...

Quite a pale brown body with a thick white-ish head. Quite a light yet slick mouthfeel, aroma is liquorish, tastes very sweet throughout with the liquorish highlights leading on to a lighter sweety finish. Quite an enjoyable beer with a sweet palate.

A dark ruby ale rather than any thing else. It has a good head and a medium bodied flavour. Quite toasted, a little bit of smokiness. Medium soft carbonation. Malt and toffee.

500ml bottle pours dark brown in color with a finger of light beige head that settles quickly leaving little head on the glass. Aroma is slightly smoky with some roasted grains and chocolate. Taste is a roasted grainy bitterness with a chocolate malty sweetness with some smoke. Medium body with light carbonation. A nicely done brew for the style and highly recommended.

Bottle, pours a light black, aroma is earthy with a bit of a kind of cherry smell, the cherry is in the flavour as well, there is also some roast in there and it is quite nice, this one was fairly enjoyable

Bottle. This is quite the malt bomb. Toffee, fudge maltiness dominates a light background hop bitterness. A nice winter beer but is a bit messy.

Bottle. Dark amber red color with light brown, long lasting head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel and dark chocolate. Taste is sweety/bitter combination. Sweet in start (but not too sweet) and moderate bitter in finish. Light to medium body with texture somwhere between watery and oily. Nice one.

50cl bottle from Gordon and MacPhail. Pours a chestnut colour with a good head. The nose has toffee with some ginger biscuits on the finish. The taste has ginger, liquorice and strong malt profile. In fact, there is a lot that reminds me of treacle bread. The palate is medium to full bodied with a tangy texture and a long but slightly cloying finish. Overall, this gets better the more I drink it. It’s slightly unbalanced, but it is complex.

Bottle@home (0,5l) Head cream colored, shrinking but stays. Color coca cola. Aroma sweet, malt. Taste malt, a little watery. Palate dry finish, soft. Overall good beer, by drinker.
