Black Douglas was a famous Scottish Knight and trusted friend of Robert the Bruce. The Bruce and Black Douglas first met only a few miles from the site of Broughton Ales in the Scottish Borders.
We like to think that the dark ruby colour and the full bodied malt flavour of this ale reflect the power and strength of this great Knight.
Major ingredients are:-
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malt and Black Malt. Hops used are English grown Challenger, and First Gold

This beer poured a clear dark amber color with decent white head that dissipated to a thin film along the top. Aroma was of roasted malt sweetness, peat, caramel. Flavor was the same and nicely balanced. Mouthfeel was pleasant, pretty full-bodied. I enjoyed this ale, and it would make a nice session beer.

50cl bottle (brown) at Pub Edward. Pours a clear brown with a rapidly disappearing offwhite head that leaves some lacing. Nose is of caramel, light fruits and earthy hops. Taste is moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Flavors are of caramel and some red berries. Light husk. Body is light to medium and carbonation medium-high. Overall a fair ESB, not world-class at all.

500ml bottle from the Co-Op in Brodick, Arran. Pours clear, dark red with a foamy head which dies down to leave nice lacing and a small off white head, Tastes of creamy dark fruits and a bit of dark pepper. Strangely then takes a turn to the hoppy side before finishing up creamy sweet. An absolute delight in a glass.
