COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Occasional.
Black Douglas was a famous Scottish Knight and trusted friend of Robert the Bruce. The Bruce and Black Douglas first met only a few miles from the site of Broughton Ales in the Scottish Borders.
We like to think that the dark ruby colour and rich malty flavour of this ale reflect the power and strength of this great Knight.

First tasted this in the Brewery Tap, Glasgow in December 1995. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull black in colour with a thin white head. Slight metallic tang of blackcurrant fruit in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malt complex gives a rather thin base considering the 5.2 ABV. Light maltloaf with hints of raisins and dark plum. Bitter almonds present in the sharp hoppy aftertaste. Thin finish with sweet berry fruit barely detectable. A bit weak and watery overall. Disappointed with BD and really expected more from this old ale. Butterknowle Black Diamond was of a simlair style & taste and was slightly superior to Broughtons effort in my opinion.

Sampled cask conditioned. Dark. Rather full bodied and buttery with low bitterness, and Broughton’s typical sweetish-fruity house character.
