This exciting beer is a blend of a strong ale and a porter style beer each brewed in their own way, but married together in a conditioning tank to produce an interesting mix of flavour and aroma.
Major ingredients are:-
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malt, Black Malt and pinhead oats. Hops used are English grown Challenger, Fuggles and First Gold

Bottled. A black beer with a beige thin head. The aroma is dusty chocolate and fruity berries and a nice hop level. The taste is porterish to begin with and there are more chocolate notes. Thena hoppy fruitiness kicks in. A very similar and equally as good beer as Old Peculier. Good work.

500ml bottle bought at Cornelius Beer and Wine in Edinburgh. Pours a deep, russet coloured topped by a light brown, frothy head. Both smell and taste have got a malty character, slightly roasted and moderately sweet. Medium bodied and soft carbonated [24.10.2008]

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle from Tesco. A lovely smelling beer. Overflowing with dark chocolate malt and some coffee notes. Reasonable looks, dark chestnut brown with just a slight head. The flavour is just not as good as the nose. More of the same dark cocoa with plenty of malt and some biscuity character but something just doesnt sit right for me. Nice bitter finish saves the day a little. Not bad overall if a slightly sickly.

Bottle, picked up at Tesco Cowley. Dark ruby coloured beer with a slim off white head. Nice aroma of fruit and some bitter chocolate. Taste was malty, fruity and the chocolate came through again, lovely warming beer.

Encouragingly stouty deep ruby pour with well-retained beige suds. More than a sniff of bitter chocolate and sappy beechwood smokiness. Silky smoked malt roastiness and a hint of hop. Carries its ABV with smoothness and poise. Stirs dewy-eyed reminiscences of both Aecht Shlenkerla Rauchbier Marzen and Theakston Old Peculiar. And you can’t ask for more than that.

Bottle from Tesco Danestone, Aberdeen. It pours dark ruby-brown, with a thin foamy beige head and low carbonation. The nose is bitter chocolate, sweet dark fruit, apple and coffee beans. The taste is bitter chocolate, coffee, blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, currant, apple, toffee and burnt malt, with some dryness in the finish. Nice balance of flavours. A very tasty brew indeed.
