This exciting beer is a blend of a strong ale and a porter style beer each brewed in their own way, but married together in a conditioning tank to produce an interesting mix of flavour and aroma.
Major ingredients are:-
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malt, Black Malt and pinhead oats. Hops used are English grown Challenger, Fuggles and First Gold

Cool 500ml bottle, pours dark ruby with a tan head. Aroma of Caramac, (do they still make Caramac?) Well balanced christmas cake fruit flavour, with a hint of licquorice. Full bodied and chewy, I am reminded of Jennings Sneck Lifter with a bit more alcoholic depth. A lovely ale for a winter night.

Bottle, picked up at Tesco Cowley. Dark ruby coloured beer with a slim off white head. Nice aroma of fruit and some bitter chocolate. Taste was malty, fruity and the chocolate came through again, lovely warming beer.

Bottle, Tesco. Pours dark brown, ruby hints - huge tan head, hardly fits in the glass with the beer. Bubbly in appearance. Nose smells soapy, with some sweet roasted malt, hinting at some sour hops there too. Mouth is carbonated, coating, sweet toffee and malts, some sourness and a touch of coriander there too. Some hickory smoke. Too sweet really, but mouth filling, slightly bitter finishes balances out the sweetness a little, but not completely. All in all, very easily drinkable.

Inky black colour, a slightly off white head, lots of blackcurrant and some caramel with some roast malts in the background, quite tangy and very smooth.

Bottle (from Tescos). Ruby coloured. Fruity nose with light roasty malt and hints of earthy hops. Nice combination of light freshness in the mouth and heavier malt flavours. Quite dry but not overly so with pleasantly laid back hops in the finish competing with roasty chocolate for attention. Very interesting but becomes slightly flat in the mouth after a while but the lack of drinkability isnt too much of a problem as this is more of a sipper.

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle from Tesco. A lovely smelling beer. Overflowing with dark chocolate malt and some coffee notes. Reasonable looks, dark chestnut brown with just a slight head. The flavour is just not as good as the nose. More of the same dark cocoa with plenty of malt and some biscuity character but something just doesnt sit right for me. Nice bitter finish saves the day a little. Not bad overall if a slightly sickly.

Bottle. Pitch black beer with a light head. The aroma is chocolate and coffee and the flavour is dry, roasted and slightly milky. Overall a nice beer.
