Cask at the Tam O’Shanter, Dumfries. Gold, clear, with a fairly tight white head. Metallic, Burton-y sulphur smell. Taste is a slightly fruity astringency, leading to intense dryness in the finish. Leaves, butter, citrus and banana notes. Ambitious but doesn’t really hit the mark.

Cask at the Salt Cot (JDW) Very pale colour with small white head. Fresh aroma rather than anything specific. Taste is more kiwi and exotic fruit than citrus. Slightly bitter finish. Not as flavoursome as other Broughton ales but still decent enough.

Cask at The Other Place. Clear amber body with a tight off-white head. Sticky lacing. Aroma of grass and stewed tea. Flavour of bitter earth, blood orange and tannic tea. Medium body with an oily texture. Faint carbonation prickle. A very drinkable IPA with good bitterness.

On tap t Cafe Royal. Appearance - a dark golden with a nice head. Nose - unfortunately a little bit of butterscotch and then some astringent malt. Taste - more of the same. Some grapefruit eventually comes through. Palate - medium bodied with a lack of refreshment generally. Overall - not an IPA at least in the modern sense of the style.

Leighton (13835) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 28, 2012
Cask at the Cleveland Arms, London. Leaves on the nose with hints of toasty malts and faint berries. Light sweet flavor with some dry citrus, modest leafy hops, some dry grass, a bit of toast. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Great balance. Dry berries to finish, light tosty sugars, twigs and leaves. Yeah, it’s a standard bitter/golden ale, but given the optimal condition here and now, this is about as good as this beer can be.
