2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask, Slug & Lettuce, Leicester. Aromas are dark syrup and toffee with earthy, herbal notes and hints of barnyard. Lightly smoky with brown sugar. Flavours are weetabix and toffee with raisins and damp florals notes. A bit flat and sweet for me.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Tasted this at the Waterside Beer Festival, Fairlie on the 24th May 2014. Gravity dispense, pours black ruby with a thin off white head. Sweet malty aroma with notes of treacle fudge. Smooth creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex gives maltloaf base with syrupy dates, dark chocolate and roast grain. There is a slight earthy note to the short lived hop resins in the quick bitter aftertaste. Malt to the forefront with sweet treacle toffee notes full in the mouth and full fruity flavours of dates and prunes and raisins. Described as a stout but comes over more as an Old Ale though. This is a cracking new ale from Broughton and highly recommended in cask.

Cask, Philarmonic, Liverpool. Dark reddy brown looks with a small tan head. Bready malts and a little roast present in the restrained beak. Sweet flavour. with more malts, some dark fruit and a little sourness. A bit thin overall. Not a massive fan of this.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On cask: Mahogany pour with a moderate off-white head. Pretty malty with some coffee, chocolate, smoke chips, oatmeal, nutty. Quite dry on the palate with the bitterness from the coffee and the hops dominate a malty/chocolate sweetness. Nice.

Reddish-brown. A bit roasty/liquoricey on the nose. Sweet, lightly toasty palate w a lot of caramel. Ok, probably needs a touch more hop.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A dark brown beer with reddish tints and a frothy off white head. A rich roasted malt aroma, coffee and chocolate, plus a slight smokiness. Dry mouthfeel. A bitter roasted malt taste, espresso coffee and dark chocolate, plus a nuttiness and a hint of smoky. There is a background fruitiness that does temper the bitterness towards the end. The bitterness does lasts into the finish.
Tasted at the Eagle & Child, Oxford.
