COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle; Pasteurised.
A traditional 80/- Specially brewed to mark 25 Years of Brewing at Broughton Ales. Typical of classic Scottish 80/- ales, Exciseman’s 80/- is dark and slightly sweet. Full drinking with a good hop aftertaste. Just the sort of ale Burns would have savoured during his time as an officer of the Excise.
Major ingredients are:-
Optic Pale Ale Malt, Black Malt, Crystal Malt. Hops used are English grown Challenger, Fuggles and first Gold.

Dark amber color. Some malt, some roundiness, some sweetness, some bitterness, a lot of boredom.

Quite a thick yet medium bodied ale with a redish-black appearance and a wonderfully thick creamy and frothy yellowing head. Biscuit-like aroma, soft and creamy tasting sensation. - This is not a bad ale, it’s quite an easy and soft drink and is worth trying out if you see it.

[500ml bottle] Pours a clear nut-brown with a large slightly off-white head. Gentle aroma of sweet, malted milk biscuits and caramel toffee. On the flavour, it begins quite sweet but quickly a faint bitterness arrives. Very drinkable – tastes like toasted caramel, nuts, some brown sugar but with a bitter, slightly earthy finish [13052012]

Bottle. Pretty decent example of an 80/-. This would be a good session bitter.

A slightly hoppy nose but in the mouth more of a malty beer. Smooth, not bitter. Drinkable.

Gift from the Scotsman (Scott McCall). A nice amber pour with a nose of caramel malts. Mild hoppy taste thin in body. Just ok for me.

[2736-20100129] 500mL bottle. Mild fruity malt aroma with caramel hints. Slightly hazy, dark brown red body with a quick foamy light tan head. More currants and heavy fruit in the flavour with toasted notes throughout. Medium-full body. Interesting malty brew.

2009-01-29. Dark brown body, modes beige head. 3+ Aroma has a dark nutty malt character to it, light toasty roast touches to it. 6+ Flavour is similar, sweet malt care, dry nutty toasty overtones. Very light bitterness throughout lingers a bit in the finish. 6+ Average palate feels thin for this beer. Okay, feels more like a sweet brown ale than an 80 shilling. Okay, simple. Bottle from Wine Centre, Kilkenny

Medium beige head. Brown body with carbonation. Harmonic fruity roasty straw and earth aroma with cinnamon and chocolate notes. Dry-sweetish roasty spicy caramelly taste with wooden cinnamon notes. Fizzy, sharpish mouthfeel. Mid-to-full body. Dry roasty cinnamon aftertaste with earthy peppery notes. Nice and drinkable. (0.5l bottle, Wine rack, Edinburgh.)
