Aroma is very faint, with a bread malt, minor floral hops, a faint doughy yeast. The appearance is a very clean light copper with a small collar of white head. The taste has a nice light bitterness, with some pleasant dough and caramel malt flavors. The finish is thin bodied, with a very lean texture, a small amount of carbonation, and an abrupt finish. A very nice session brew, would definitely buy again.

Maker: Broughton Ales, Biggar, Scotland *** Beer: Broughton Merlin’s Ale (bottled, 500ml) *** Style: Bitter (?!) *** ALC.VOL.: 4.2% *** "A light golden hoppy beer with a malty character, a clean dry hop-bitter aftertaste and a delicate floral hop aroma." [brewery note] *** Colour: Light, slightly hazy amber with a small, fluffy off-white head. *** Nose: Flowery hops, caramel malt, citrus. *** Texture: Medium body, hardly watery. Moderate carbonation. *** Taste: Biscuit malt, a sharp herbal & citrusy note at first. Pine. Resinous(!) towards the middle, with floral hops, pine, black tea. Finish is resinous pine against set against malt, with a moderately long after taste of pine and lemon. *** Impressions: Not really a "bitter" (Thanks!), more of a pale ale. Pine, floral hops and citrus aren’t typical of the English bitter style. Nice, thirst-quenching pale ale then, with a nice malty backdrop but a dominance of hops.

Bottle from Booths in Ripon. Pours golden with a thin off-white head. A pretty standard malt dominated bitter. Mostly toasty with a little citrus and spice. Quite high carbonation. Goes down easy enough, but unspectacular.
