COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Previously 6.2%.
A classic Scottish Strong Ale. Named after the soldiers of the Highland and Lowland Scottish regiments, this ale has a full-bodied flavour of malt on an excellent background of hop bitterness. A drink to savour.

On cask at The Heriot-Watt Beer Festival. Pours a dark brown colour with a fair beige head. Aroma of caramel, treacle and alcohol. Similar flavours and quite dry to finish. Very nice with mild carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Lingering alcohol and toffee notes.

First tasted this at the Golf Inn, Bishopton in September 1979 and more or less monthly at Tennents Bar, Glasgow up until 2011 when they stopped selling it? Cask, handpump dispense. Dark ruby with amber tints around the edges and a thick creamy buff head. Has a fantastic sweet intense aroma of highland toffee and crispy bacon when on form. Creamy mouthfeel and decent lacing. Pale malt complex gives a strong maltloaf base with soft butterscotch, maple syrup, ripe figs and sometimes a sour pineapple note. There is also a secondary layer of flavours in the aftertaste with salty overcooked cabbage, chewy bacon and dusty hop resins. The finish is warming and powerful with vinous port and damsons coming through in a velvety sweet alcoholic burp. A superb strong Scottish old ale in style and sadly missed at Tennents Bar. Highly recommended.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Draft at the Brew Wharf mini beer festival. Worcester sauce tang, good carbonation. Sweet floral undertones. Nicely joined up. Good stuff!

Cask, gravity at The Pig’n’Falcon, St Neots, Cambridgeshire. Amber. Painty malt aroma. Sweet taste with just a little sourness. Sharp bitter finish. Perhaps it wasn’t quite ready.

Cask at Tennents Bar during Ultimate glasgow tasting 1 Dec 07 after hours pub crawl, for years I thought this beer was Old Jack Ale hence the old notes: Poured a copper orange with very little off white head. Aroma was sweet of caramel malt. The aroma flowed straight into the caramel malt taste, had just enough bitterness in the end to keep it balanced.

Cask-conditioned at the Victoria, Clifton, Bristol 3/2/09. Orange coloured with no head. Very sweet, toffee aroma with some earthiness. Flavour was sweet also, with some spice and a strange savoury edge. reminded me of a clean, sanitised version of Blue Anchor Spingo Special. Ok.
