Bottle. Clear red brown coloured with a beige head. Light roasted aroma with notes of chocolate and vanilla. Light roasted flavour of chocolate.

Bottle from Waitrose. Very dark brown (almost black) colour, not much head. Grassy malt aroma. Grassy roasted treacle malt flavour, spicy aftertaste. Drinkable stout but nothing special.

Bottle from John Lewis, Norwich. Pours a very dark brown with a touch of rusty red at the edges. The tight tan head initially billows and looks as though it may stay but then collapses in on itself to leave a disc of carbonated foam. There is a sweet malty light milk chocolate aroma. Thin to medium bodied and initially quite drying over the tongue, a sweet and slightly creamy milk chocolate hit has a slightly chalky edge but maintains a tingling lactose sweetness on the palate concentrated towards the back of the mouth. More of the lactose creaminess stays on into the finish. This beer reminds me of the milk gum sweets that I had as a child and I remeber A-level exams, but with a little milk chocolate edge. Very tasty, almost a bed-time stout.

Tall brown 500ml bottle, best before the end of March 2011, drank and reviewed on 18th Jan 2011. Poured into a UK pint, sleeve glass: Very dark body, almost jet black, held up to a light source however the true deep ruby red colour comes through. The head was a rich foaming blanket of tan coloured foam. The aroma was of roasted malts, not a lot of sweetness or hop smells. The taste was all malts, like the smell, fairly dry and with a bitter finish. I thought the body a wee bit thin for a stout and lacking in depth or creaminess. Well carbonated but the flavours in the beer are one dimensional and didn’t excite me at all.

From the 500 ml. bottle with a Best By date of Nov 12. The pour is dark brown to rich black with a tremendous foamy head that eventually lets go and simmers down. The aroma is subtle with dark roasted malts and oats. The body is pretty good. The taste is mellow and malty at the start and ends with a pleasing bitter hop character.

500ml bottle pours black in color with some red highlights when held to a light source and has a finger of light brown head that retains very well and leaves some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark roasted malts and hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is roasted malty bitterness with some chocolate malty sweetness and a moderate hoppy bitter finish. A little thin on the body for this style, but still a good tasty brew.

Bottle (500ml):
Dark, roasted malts and lighter coffee notes along with some dark chocolate to begin with. There is some grain and barely too.
Dark, mahogany brown with a thin & bubbly, half-centimetre head that is light brown & stays throughout.
Dark malts, some milky coffee and a little roasted barely account for most of the taste here but not in a manner that I enjoyed. The finish was a bitter hops one.
Quite thin in body with a lot more carbonation than I would have preferred, it almost feels like I’m drinking a cola.

Really disappointing to me, I didn’t find it particularly well balanced or flavourful with too much fizz, I can’t see what all the fuss is about here. Not a fan.

Bottle from Gordon and MacPhail, Elgin. Appearance - very dark brown with ruby edges, 1 finger off white head. Aroma - roast malt, milk chocolate, hint of coffee. Taste - sweet malt, roast malt, some bitter hop, hint of coffee and chocolate, bit disappointing after inital aroma. Palate - watery for stout, quite thin mouthfeel, dull finish slight roast and hop bitterness. Overall - Quite a nice beer, but as a stout rather bland and watery, not much silkiness from the oats, flavours a bit too subdued. An above-average beer, but as a stout below average.

[500ml bottle, Peckhams Stockbridge, Edinburgh] Dark blackish brown pour with reddish hints. Aromas of chocolate malt and roasted, toasty notes. There is some oat on the taste, along with the dark malts. Coffee bitterness that leads into the finish, which is dry and bitter, although a touch watery [09072007]

Bottle. Pours a dark amber brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty chocolate aroma. Roasted malty chocolate flavor with some hints of caramel Has a roasted malty chocolate finish.
