COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Occasional.
Oats are used in the brewing of Scottish Oatmeal Stout to enhance the flavour of the black malt and roasted barley which give this traditional beer its rich dark colour and strong, complex roasted malt aroma and flavour, reminiscent of coffee and chocolate. These flavours are offset by a good hop bitterness and silky aftertaste.
Robert Younger, great grandfather of the founder of Broughton Brewery would be proud of this fine stout.

Much more widely available in bottle than on cask, so this was a welcome opportunity to try this beer as a real ale. Pitch black in colour, with very little head. Biscuity malt aroma. Roasty flavour with hints of tobacco. Quite sweet. Not very full bodied. Perfectly acceptable, but a bit short of interest. Cask (gravity dispense), Battersea Beer Festival 2005.

First tasted this at the Renfrew Beer Festival in October 1991. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull black in colour with ruby tints and a thin off white head. Burnt roast malt in the lingering aroma. Thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malts give a burnt toast note to start but this soon fades as bitter chocolate, roast coffee and strong sweet treacle flavours take over. Very dusty hop resins give a strong bitter bite to the aftertaste. Finish is rather too dry and woody though, which came as a surprise as Maclays Oat Malt Stout was a much sweeter stout by comparison. Still a very good stout and worth seeking out.

Almost black color. Very light aroma, some roasted malt in it. Poor body and flavor, some roasted malt, lightly smokey. Boring.

A Mes rate. Cask at the Market Porter. Black body with a tan head and decent condition. Rich smoked malt aroma with some slight earth, not amazing but nice enough. There is an odd note of cardboard in the flavour but lashings of smoky malt and some cereal and bread sort it out nicely. Meaty finish with plenty of bacon plus some developing chalky chocolate. Interesting but not quite right.

Gravity Cask @ Battersea Beer Festival. Deep black. Watery and thin. Sweet liquoricey malts and tart berries. A little boring. Oatmeal seems to have a reputation as adding a full smooth silkiness to the body but this was less richly bodied than most standard stouts.
