3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 berkshirejohn (3014) - Bracknell, - AUG 24, 2009
50cl bottle from Tesco, Edinburgh. Copper with a fast fading cream head; treacle and malt aromas; strong. chewy malty flavours with a hint of nuts and toffee; the finish is dry and smoky. Very pleasant.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 16, 2012
The beer is names after an old Scottish Landlady and her pub, the rear label tells one all about it, an interesting tale.
Anyway, this review is of a 500ml brown bottle, poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged pint vase during Nov 2010.
The beer is a ruby red colour, clear and clean looking. A weak tan coloured head sat on top, the head giving some, but not much lacing.
The smell and taste was of malt molasses, too sweet for my normal palate, even though I prefer the sweeter beers.
The body wasn’t rich enough, lacking in depth to the carry off the 6%ABV, a strange brew.
Didn’t really take to it, but nothing wrong, just my tastebuds not fitting in with the brewers vision of the beers strenghts.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DruncanVeasey (5146) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - NOV 1, 2010
Bottle from Stinckley B+M. Chestnut with a fat beige collar leaving whirls of lace. Malt loaf, licorice and aniseed aroma with a mildly vinous undercurrent. Full and malt-heavy with a pleasant melding of aniseedy spice and chocolate, finishing slightly warm with a marzipan-hinting finish. A dab salty in that Scottish way. Jock Doppelbock? Decent.

Bottle, shared with friends. Brown beer with red shine, no foam. Aroma is metallic, grape juice and sweet. Taste is sweet and fruity (grapes). Light hops. Not much too say about this beer, except it’s a very drinkable one.

3.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 scotty (904) - SCOTLAND - AUG 15, 2009
Good dark copper colour, head is reasonable, lasts quite well. Malt dominates the nose and the palate, with a touch of hops lurking in the background. Initially, the palate was quite closed and didn’t give much away, but after a few seconds the malty flavours really came to the fore and lingered well on the finish. A good brew, not Broughtons best, but a cracker nevertheless, Haven’t been to the inn in years, must pay it a visit soon and report back!
