Dark amber-orangeish color, with a small white head, yeasty, fruity ripe apple nose, with a faint peachy, orange, apricot esters, with a mild toasty, biscuity maltiness in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with yeasty, fruity, light sweet liquorish toasty, biscuity, caramelized malt, warmth character, with some mild citrus, candied tangerine, orange peel, flavors, with a brandyish, faint Grand Marnier liqueur accent, and some light flowery hop citrusy leafiness notes, leading towards a warming, sweet toasted, fruity orangey, lingering shy hop bitterness finish.

(Rating #2322)

A golden amber ale with a thin white head. A herbal aroma, with British hops and vinous notes. In mouth, a barley wine with catnip, mineral qualities, treacle, lots of British hops, a bit light but good. On tap at Brouhaha, March 28 2009.

12 ounce bottle via glouglouburp- pours a hazy burnt caramel colour. Not much for head or lacing. Nose- strong pine and caramel/tofee. Very rich Taste- very sweet toffee, oranges, nutty. pretty much a malt bomb where the nice pine in the nose doesn’t carry through in the taste. Lingering sweet finish.

341ml bottle. Pours a deep clear reddish-amber color with an off-white head that leaves some film on the beer and a thick ring. Nice spicy aroma that hints of cinnamon red hot candies and ripe fruits, as well as sweet toffee malts and some hop resins. The flavor is a little on the sweet side, but pretty good besides that. Big English toffee on the malt, sugar plum, orange, and molasses, with a mildly hoppy finish. The level of booziness is about what you’d expect, and the carbonation is on the softer side. This is a good barleywine for sure, but not awesome by any means. Good to get some nice Canadian ticks in though.

Bottled sample via Fred82. Deep amber in colour with low carbonation. Aromas are of fat pale malts, booze, candied and stewed fruits, and caramel. Quite full bodied on the palate, with flavours of dark caramel, pale malts, candied orange peel, minerals, and a hint of spice. Pretty well balanced, but a touch boozy. The mouthfeel is a bit unique as it is quite slick, but the beer itself isn’t sweet or cloying. Solid.

2011 vintage. Pours a dark amber with a thin white ring of foam that leaves some lacing. Aroma is composed of hot alcohol and brown sugar. Taste is sweet, almost too sweet. A nice and clean bitterness saves it, though. Flavors of maple syrup, brown sugar and booze. A bit hot even with 2 years on it. Body is medium-full and mouthfeel is sticky. Carbonation level is low. OK

Thick syrupy, very full bodied, almost like an IIPA. Some citrus and caramel notes. Not great balance, not great depth, but ok. Kinda what barely wines were commonly like 10 years ago. Ok.

My Bottom Line:
The hops’ orange pulp and wooden resins are ably balanced by toasted, biscuity malts in this smooth and warming English-style Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam decorates the shiny amber.
-The flavor profile is very clean throughout.
-The malt character could use some caramelization (for my tastes in the style, anyway).
-Peppery alcohol heat is found in the aroma and flavor profile.
-Dextrins are kept under control in this Barley Wine, which is not often the case in this usually hefty style.

On tap at Brouhaha.
