COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The first batch of our blackberry saison is out for distribution - dog ate my homework, 7% alc/vol with approximately 1lb of fruit per liter. Why Blackberries? Blackberries have a wonderful sweetness that is not TOO sweet or full. They are rich in color and aroma and have a unique drying charcter that is felt across the whole pallet. I am not a fan of sweet beers, so it was important to me that this beer have lots of deep blackberry fruit and a deep respect for the saisonís dry palate.

Anticipated this bottle from high-brow market so shared with kmweaver...yet another disappointment. The art on the label is great (silly, right) ,but I more thought this had promise since Iíd noted a saison yeast quality alongside well-defined fruit flavor in a draft pour sample months earlier. This was not the case in the bottle. Blackberry aroma presents well in color and aroma, but is more like cooked pancake syrup in flavor and mouthfeel. Yeast character lost in this one. More of a murky fruit beer.

Deep dark ruby and violet coloured body with a rich, four centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of blackberries, icing sugar, raspberries, figs, yeast and a lot of alcohol noticeable, along with bitterness. Medium-bodied; Assertive malt flavours up front with a lot of fruit noticeable as well, from strawberries to blueberries and definitely both - blackberries and raspberries. Aftertaste shows a good balance with much more of a european and fruity kick than a malty presence. Overall, an interesting beer with a ton of flavour and a full-finished sweet beer with a lot of nuances from other styles. I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 25-April-2014 for US$8,00 sampled at home in Washington on 04-August-2014.

500ml bottle via trade. Pours a very murky deep red with a large light pink head. Aromas of Belgian yeast esters, some fruit. Taste is dry and lightly sour. High carbonation. Flavors of raspberry jam, white pepper, some clove. They claim this is a saison with a fruit addition, and that is exactly what it tastes like. Not a fruit beer at all in my opinion. Finishes pretty dry but with a hint of subtle raspberry jam. Nice, probably the best fruit beer Iíve ever had, and I hate fruit beers.

500ml bottle in a tulip. Pours deep purple with a pinkish/purplish head. Aroma of blackberries, some dryness, hints of tartness, and light malts. The flavor isnít very balanced and the berries donít mesh well with the beer. Average texture. Could be better - like Almanacís blackberry beer.

Bottle. Ruby pour with white head. Blackberry and tart fruit aromas. Flavor is a big disappointment from aroma, no real funk or tartness.

Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours turbid medium violet colored with pink head. Nice fresh-picked raspberry nose. The flavor s somewhat tart, with a great raspberry flavor and a fruity, earthy finish. This one reminds me a lot of Sly Fox black raspberry ale.

Sampled at esbls. Reddish and haxy with an off white head. This is fruoty and a little funky. Berries. Malts and yeast. Pretty good and fun.

Bottle. Pinkish reddish pour with a monster head. Quite dry. Blackberry and tart dry plum. Okay for me.

Bottle left at my house by Tim. Deep magenta pour with a light pink head. Aroma of blackberry jolly ranchers with a slight tartness. Flavor is similar and slightly sweet. Medium bodied a bubbly carbonation.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, pink, mostly lasting. Body is dark red. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), with notes of cranberry, redcurrant, pomegranate, twigs. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately astringent, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Well shucks...I was hoping this might be a porter/stout with blackberries added, just based on holding the bottle up to the light in the store, seemed dark enough. íCause that would probably be pretty tasty. But alas, this is just a novelty fruit beer, a malty soda pop. Oh well. Not bad, just boring and simple / one-dimensional. Yet another brewery that apparently doesnít know the difference between palette, pallet, and palate.

JBPortland (747) - Portland, Maine, USA - MAR 25, 2014
500ml bottle pours dark violet with a finger of pink head. Nose is juicy blackberry, grape jelly, wine. Taste is dry fruity blackberry, red grape, dusty yeast. Finish is dry berries and saison yeast. Impressive that a fruit beer so juicy can be so dry, but comes off more like drinking juice than beer.
