Bottle from SL, enjoyed at SL. The pour was amber in color with a totally pathetic head for any beer, let alone the style. The aroma was malty sweet caramel and some spices. The flavor was caramelly sweet (a darker Belgian ale than I like) with some saffron type spicing in there. The sweetness was near cloying for a lower abv Belgian Ale, and this had no dryness from yeast or hops, as I prefer in my Belgian ales. Slight zing from the spices in the finish, but this was sloppy. Ah well, win some, lose some. (Orval should have it’s own class, where beers like this can’t sniff proximity in style name.)

willblake (2601) - Bel Air, Maryland, USA - FEB 4, 2010
20100204 750ml bottle from State Line. Hazed medium amber color with small, fleeting white head. Aroma is of slightly stale wheat bread, peppery notes, some canned beans. Intense, prickly carbonation overwhelms a comparatively thin body. Husky grains, more vegetal notes, mild spice, pretty bland overall and mostly sweet. Finish shows some peppery yeast and lingering sweetness. Overall disappointing.
