yesyouam (313), Fairport, New York, USA Jun 23, 2008 Brown’s Oatmeal Stout is a brownish black ale with a small light brown head. The aroma is sweet and soft: chocolate, molasses and oats. It is medium full bodied and smooth with a dry, almost gritty, finish. It has a very fresh flavor with good balance. Chocolate, caramel and oats are prominent in the taste, as they were in the aroma. It has a botanical bitterness that is polite in strength. A roasted flavor comes out as it warms. It’s a good stout. pint_size (999), Austin, Texas, USA Jun 2, 2008 5-20-08 bottle
Medium black pour with a good (although short lived) tan beige head and no lacing. Smell is roasted walnuts and malt with a hint of soy sauce in there too. Flavor is watery and crappy malt. Mouthfeel is not very enjoyable at all - thin and watery. Not the most appetizing beer for me. lb4lb (1270), Austin, Texas, USA May 20, 2008 Bottle in trade from a forgotten source. Sorry and thanks!
Pours a mostly black color with a medium lived light tan head. Smell is smooth lightly roasted malt and creaminess. Taste is lightly roasty with a metallic and dry finish. Medium to light bodied but a bit of a watery flavor. Kind of a dull flavor and a touch tart, almost as if this isn’t very fresh. No idea of bottles age, however. Slepkov (15), Ithaca, USA Mar 2, 2008 Pours a velvety liquid as black as espresso; a void from which nothing good could come. Or could it? A mocha head is almost guinness-like, and admirably persistent. The nose is rich if a little sour. Biscuits and coffee with a little off-soured-yeast. In the mouth a welcome tartness yields to ample, but not sweet maltiness, with strong rootbeer overtones. A well balanced mineral finish. Impressively crisp. Browns came back with Mr. Black! Rastacouere (5201), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Feb 17, 2008 Mostly opaque black pour. Minimal lace surrounds the light tan head. The first impression after smelling is of wax - it,s hard to find that appealing in a stout. Sweetish and bready example with a fair toasted malt background, but little roastiness. Powdery ashes tones are perceived, but it,s subtle and remains bready more than anything. Light-medium bodied. Dull malts and hopless.
