yesyouam (401), Fairport, New York, USA Jun 23, 2008 Brown’s Oatmeal Stout is a brownish black ale with a small light brown head. The aroma is sweet and soft: chocolate, molasses and oats. It is medium full bodied and smooth with a dry, almost gritty, finish. It has a very fresh flavor with good balance. Chocolate, caramel and oats are prominent in the taste, as they were in the aroma. It has a botanical bitterness that is polite in strength. A roasted flavor comes out as it warms. It’s a good stout.
hophead75 (1768), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Jan 4, 2009 sampled at the brewpub. Almost black in color. Aroma has some chocolate, with some roast peeking in, some crystal/caramel malts. Taste is pretty simple- chocolate, a touch of roast, the silky oatmeal does come through a bit in the body as does the willamette hops- faint floral/citrus. Light to moderate body, with a light bittering finish. Clean and very drinkable. DrDavid (669), Johnson, Vermont, USA Oct 21, 2008 (Bottle). Aroma is mainly chocolate. Black body, thin tan head. Flavor is chocolate and roastiness. Body a bit thin. Nice and smooth drinkability. Haslinger (574), Syracuse, New York, USA Jul 23, 2008 on tap at the Empire State Brew Fest in Syracuse Good malty stout, not great but not horrible. Would maybe buy again oteyj (391), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Jul 21, 2008 Pours black with two finger tan head. Aroma is somewhat weak- mostly roasted malt and a bit of a sweet molasses smell. Flavor is roasty and almost smokey with lots of malt. Sweet residual sugars present int he form of caramel and dark chocolate. Not overly flavorful or hard hitting, but the flavors work in this combination. Palate is hideously thin for a stout, and leaves little in the form of an aftertaste. Quite drinkable, however. Would make a good session ale.
