Belgian black ale reminds the drinker of the chocolate side of dark malts, leaving behind bitter astringency.

A truly unique beer, Black Belgian with a gentle but powerful head of raisins and yeasty alcohol. Pretty body, almost opaque black but a dark burgundy shines through the light. Taste if raisins, prunes, dates...all those dried fruits. Get this, it’s rare, find it.

Because Andy insisted. Draft at brewery - dark for the style. Malty for the style. Chocolate and tobacco. Not what I come to expect from the style and this is a good thing. Distinct

Draft. As the older large lady with the gizzard neck takes another bite of her crêpes, Mr Chudwick speaks of bubblegum in his Trippel de Ripple. I smell metallic notes right off the bat, but I also get the typical Belgian yeast with a bit more complexity. On the palate, it gets complex as all get out. Notes of cigar tobacco, leather, aged cedar?, dark fruit, other stuff, & such. I was not expecting, especially based on the aroma, for this beer to be a mind blower, but fuck...just fuck. Maybe I am just loosing it.

Draft: Pours black...with a small tan head. Chocolate, light licorice, yeast aroma. Flavour is slightly lactic, chocolate malt, Belgian yeast. Creamy and mild.... Could easily be mistaken for a stout. Really nice.

Draft. Dusty, yeasty chocolate malt and hay aroma. Black with moderate head. Sweet chocolate malt and musty yeast flavor. Nice - very stout-like.

Not very good beer. But sounds good. Good descriptions but not that good of a beer. Flavors are Belgian like. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft to taster at Brugge. Looks good for the style; a dark cola with foamy beige head. Smells of Belgian yeast, dark malt, and bitter chocolate. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

Flight on tap at the brewpub (Indianapolis, IN). Pours a rich blackish brown pour, mellow haze, with some brownish ruby edges and bottom. A frothy light brown head sits atop, firmly sized with good lacing, sticks around as a thick film. Aromas are roasty malts, chestnuts, and cocoa. Touches of dark fruit, toffee, and dark chocolate dance in. Mellow coffee roast, raisin, and touches of plum. More roast and cocoa as it warms, coffee, biscuity and sweet malts with touches of Belgian yeast influence. Initial is smooth and medium bodied, envelopes the palate with nutty malts, toffee, and roast. Rich dark chocolate gives dryness, with mellow toffee, touches of creamy sweetness hit the palate with touches of dryness, heat, and mellow earthy dry hops into the backend. A distinct ABV heat hits midway through, the malts do their best to distract. Dry and roast, richer sweet and mellow sticky elements offer some life as the backend really tries to dry out, roasty and earthy cocoa, firm hops, ABV related heat. Touches of Belgian yeast give a touch of mellow spice, firm dark fruit influence. Solid darker Belgian, if a bit big for my palate int he ABV department. A touch hot at times. Some kisses of anise.
