A good dose of roastiness in the aroma with sweet caramel elements. Brown sugar and bark, dark malt flavors. Takes a long time to warm up as it is served too cold (but in great glassware, a snifter shaped just like the Expedition Stout glass), but when warm is very enjoyable, if a bit thin-bodied.

Reminded me of Bell’s Hell Hath... On tap, poured in a snifter. A medium tan soft creamy head. Aroma of yeast, some chocolate, and dark fruit. Taste of dark bread, choclate, spices with some sweetness.

This draft brew from Mad Anthony Oktoberfest poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized bubbles that was fully diminished and left behind a opaque no visible carbonation dark brown colored body and a fair lacing. The mild aroma was sweet and dark malt. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start mediumly tingly at the finish. The flavor contained notes of mild hops sweet and dark malt. A decent one that I would consider buying again.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2010 draft - Pours black with a thin head. It has very little aroma, just a bit of malt. The flavor is surprisingly light for being so dark and it’s also surprisingly thin bodied. It mostly just tastes of sweet roast malt with a smooth feel and short finish. Eh. Rerate from Indiana winterfest - Sweet, roasty, fruity brew with chocolate notes. Liked it a bit more this time. 6/4/7/3/13

Draft at Mad Anthony Oktoberfest. Small tan head that quickly dissipated, minimal lacing, no visible carbonation, opaque, and a dark brown hue. Hard to find an aroma that stuck out as this was really lacking for a standout aroma. There was some subtle hops and some sweetness. Flavor was subtle hops and a slight burnt taste. Again, lacking a standout flavor. Smooth mouthfeel. Not very impressed due to the lack of aroma and flavor.

on tap at Brugge - I will start off by saying it was the end of a long night when I rated this one and my palate was a bit fried. Aroma is sweet, malty, and smokey. Pours black with a smalll head and decent lacing. Flavor is roasted malts, yeast, smoke, cocoa, and a little hop tartness. Palate is thin and sticky like a European dark lager. Different and interesting.

Deep brown body with a thick, cocoa colored head. The nose is quite interesting with notes of overripe fruit, bittersweet chocolate, licorice, light smoke, burnt toast, molasses, some faint esters and a hint of cardamon. The body is full and robust with elegant carbonation and a nice velvety feel on the tongue. The flavors are nice with a tasty melding of smoke, burnt toast, dark fruits and licorice. It’s probably not my favorite beer from Brugge but it’s still tasty and damn unique. The smoke and deep roasted element in a Belgian. Whodda thunk it? Worth trying, without a doubt. Is it me, or are these beers just getting better and better?

Draft at The Brugge. Pours a dark black with a white quick fading head, that fades to absolutley nothing. Aroma is somewhat balnd, notes of malts, and maybe a light white chocolate. Flavor is of a dark wheaty with a slight souring finish. Has some notes of chocolate and roastiness. Very nice.

On tap at teh Brugge. Pours a deep black color with a very nice large brown head. The aroma is mostly comprised of a somewhat light roasted malt, little else. The flavor, on the other hand, is much more rewarding than the aroma. There is a decent smoked malt character followed by a sweet maple character. The roast and sweetness continue to trade off and as it warms some vanilla , great chocolate and carmel malts and a husky nutty malt all appear. For the flavor that it contains it is a tad thin, but the flavor really makes this one worth while in my book.
