4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 locarboy (119) - USA - FEB 13, 2010
This beer was recommended by the owner/one of the owners of Crown Brewing in Crown Point, IN (where I had lunch and a flight :-). I purchased this out of the refrigerated case at Wise Guy Liquors in CP, IN. It was reasonably priced at around $7 or $8. 750 ml traditional Belgian bottle with painted label and metal crown closure. Not a lot of ’pop’ when opening. Poured with a 1.5 to 2 inch head into a 0.4 ltr goblet. A little darker than I think necessary. Lovely Belgian Tripel aroma of spices and yeast. The aroma of this one foreshadows the taste. A nice balance of malty goodness with spice and yeast (if you like the flavor of Belgian Abbey yeast you will most likely appreciate this ale). Could use a bit more carbonation; not so much as a TJ’s anniversary, but t’was enough, t’was enough. Adequate carbonation to tingle the tongue. Not too heavy. You won’t realize you are drinking such a high gravity beer (a hallmark of the style). I really enjoyed this one. Maybe someday it will come to my home town on tap. As a native Hoosier I would be able to brag there is great beer made in Indiana (we consider Hammond part of Chicago - same time zone, etc.)

Golden orange pour with hardly a ring for a head. Nose includes honey, vanilla, some yeasty spice, and a little toffee and butterscotch, but not in a bad way. Taste is richly sweet, and mildly tart and bitter. Palate is fuller with low low carbonation. Alcohol really isn’t noticeable unless you pair it with something that mutes its sweetness. Pretty tasty.

Boom! An in your face beer. Aroma it’s strong, spicy and tart. Poured with little head but a nice spiral of bubbles. Taste is tart and sour, with coriander, cinnamon, apple and pear. Haven’t had much if this style but this is phenomenal.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a lint golden orange with a small white head, slightly hazy. Aroma is citric slightly yeasty and quite spicy a nice balanced sweetness with the grain along with the spice and earthy note. Flavor starts sweet but quickly picks up the necessary spice and sharp citric note some sweet vanilla before a crisp and refreshing lightly grainy finish. Medium to medium full body. Nice triple

On tap at Brugge Brasserie last weekend. Served in a goblet.
Poured a nice golden color with a good white head and plenty of lacing on the way down. The nose carried nice notes of pear and green apple in addition to light pepper and a bit of alcohol. Fruit throughout. The flavor carried too much booze and not enough of the yeast character, though there were still nice notes of ripe pear. Mouthfeel was medium with good carbonation, though there was far too much of an alcohol character. Pretty good, but too boozy.

ITs a solid beer on tap. The first time I tried it was in a 22oz bottle and it had to be infected- sour, explosive, undrinkable. After telling the bro in law this he insisted on taking me to the brew pub to try it fresh. I was a very well balanced and taste beer on tap. I might purchase with caution in the bottle however.

One of the last pours from the keg at Brugge Brasserie. Pour is golden yellow and mostly clear but with depth and richness of color. Smells of honey comb and lemon rind. Definitely pear and vanilla. A lot of spice. Banana. Esters a plenty. Wish this was a fresh keg. But a sample is a sample and I’m not complaining. Pretty good. Has lost a little life. I’m guessing though from being the arse end of a batch. Not bad at all regardless.

Draft at Brew Pub. Appearance was orangish color with light, frothy head. Aroma is pear, some citrus, and yeast. Taste is similar with pear, banana, and slight citrus with a doughy yeast flavor and slight floral hop bitterness. Palate is medium-bodied, soft carbonation, smooth texture, and slight bitter finish. Nice Tripel.

Draft. Brew Pub, Indy.
I’ll begin with a caveat - I may have been drunk when I sampled this. However, the three other people I was drinking with agree - this is a brilliant tripel. Wicked fruity character to it, which was unexpected. Excellent colour, decent head. A fantasti beer through and through - I’ll update this review when I can remember the beer a little better!

On tap at the brewpub into a tulip. The biggest review beer with a good review, I gave this one a try first. Let down...Pours an ugly dark gold, muddied. A light off white head that only rises a weak finger, but sticks for awhile...A dead and boring aroma, light floral yeast and banana...The taste is strong belgian yeast, way way to much. Light floral notes, alcohol really comes through on the finish.
This was the least impressive of the beers we drank. I would not recommend this beer.
