3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Radek Kliber (5970) - Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), POLAND - JUN 20, 2004
Very nice Belgian. Despite its potency this ale was soft and surprisingly drinkable. I had fun sipping those malty flavours blended with nice yeasty touch. I would never say that this ale was over 8 %.
2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 Ernest (5646) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - DEC 28, 2001
Head is small, frothy, off-white, and fully diminishing. Body is dark orange-brown and hazy (bottle conditioned). Aroma is predominantly dark bread/molasses malt (some roasted/coffee character), with faint grapefruity hops, hint of doughy yeast, some banana, honey, licorice, cola, and ginger. Medium to full body, dry and mostly syrupy texture, soft to flat carbonation. Flavor is predominantly sweet, with a small amount of acidity and trace bitterness, with a sweet and slightly sour finish. Disappointing one-dimensional flavor/mouthfeel and aroma...leans heavily in the syrupy malt direction.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Glouglouburp (5619) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 28, 2006
UPDATED: JAN 18, 2008 Pours an almost brown very dark red. Thick light brown head with good retention. In the past I’ve had some with particles and some very clear (???). Taste of dark fruits, some dark caramel/molasses with, some earthy spices and a typical 8.5% abv alcohol feel. Somewhat similar to the better-known and more widely available Maredsous 8 but with a creamier mouthfeel and a stronger caramel flavour. Not any better or worse than the Maredsous. But that’s just my opinion and Everyone is entitled to my opinion.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 DonMagi (5598) - bantervile, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - NOV 22, 2005
What do i say here? This is a quad not a brune, not anythign even like a dubbel. Well if it is a brune then its the most complex brune in the world, as is refected in its alcohol content. Aroma is a yeast which i would normally associate with rochefort and st bernards, Overly dark fruits with candy sugar rasisns and malt malt malt. Taste is very similar with maybe some almond character too and a great long finish. Im very close to asking wither this is rochefort 8, in a different bottle, otherwise i think its my second top rated brune, and one to get again foresure.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Rciesla (5499) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - SEP 11, 2009
Bottle. Pours a brune body with a flat abbey like head (no carbonation at all). Malted raisins, Belgian yeast, dark dried fruits, hints of vinous plums. Thin with a cask like woodiness hints of licorice and plum. A hint of oak and soy. I dunno the missing carbonation is throwing me off from enjoying this one.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 duff (5484) - Lund, SWEDEN - JAN 24, 2002
Nice carbonation with a decent head, dark fruit flavours, a bit bitter, sweet at times, good, but had a bit of a rough finish.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 BBB63 (5423) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - JUN 20, 2004
UPDATED: JUN 21, 2004 1999 Bottle: Muddy brown hue with short lived off-white head and no lace. The aroma has notes of caramel, toffee, ripened blackberry, floral hops, wood, and earthy yeast esters. The taste starts sweet with a lot of malt character. Additional undertone of ripe fruit, walnut, and yeast. Some undefined spice and wood on finish. The feel is oily and soft, bone dry on finish. Alcohol is well hidden. This beer comes off more like an Old English Ale than a Belgian Strong. Quaffable but perhaps a bit past prime.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 larsga (5364) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUL 17, 2010
Big coarseish offwhite lasting head. Hazy amber body. Spicy herbal aroma with cinnamon mealy notes. Dry-sweetish spicy fruity taste with grassy herbal notes. Mild, smooth mouthfeel. Light body. Delicate and harmonic. Dry mealy fruity herbal aftertaste with honey notes lingers for a long time. Very, very nice, and dangerously drinkable. (0.33l bottle, Bistro de Pompe, Bruges.)
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 KnutAlbert (5211) - Oslo, NORWAY - APR 10, 2010
Bottle from the brewpub.
Nice malty stuff, Belgian yeast, lots of sweet flavour, but lacking any kind of inventive hoppiness to lift it. They should work a bit more on this.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 ThomasE (5176) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - DEC 17, 2004
Dark brown colour with lively off-white head. Aroma has some sweet malts with some dark fruits, also some alcohol. Flavor is initially very sweet with lots of fruit, it then becomes more yeasty with some alcohol.
