COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
n the 80’s the interest for traditional regional beers increased. Véronique, daughter of Henri IV, launched a new special beer in 1981. It was a blond beer of high fermentation. The first time it was brewed it was for the inauguration of the Saint-Arnold statue in Bruges. Saint-Arnold is the patron of the brewers … However, the beer was a success and the Mayor asked for it to be served at receptions in the townhall. The beer was a bit stronger than other beers and that is why it got the appropriated name of ‘Straffe Hendrik’ (Strong Henri). In 1988 Riva NV took over the beer brand. Straffe Hendrik have been brewed by Riva in Bruges until 2002.

Hazy reddish/purplish brown color, aroma of grape, plums, apples, and chocolate. Excellent fruity taste, much like cherries with a nice finish of chocolate. Sweet and delicious.

Dark brown colour with a slim head. Excellent aroma; burnt sugar, sweet malts, caramel - please taste as good - yes! - as for the aroma plus dark fruits. Lightly carbonated, excellent full bodied mouthfeel. Great stuff.

ANother great Brugse product. Huge aroma: apples I think, other fruit. Some sweetness, a little bit of a tinny palate though.

Well, i don’t understand why people rate it less than the blond type, but i feel this beer as a fruity and sweet taste, altough it is very acid, it finishing is like a cooler but much better, the color is weird, maybe like the duchesse de bourgogne, this beer is worth a try, i tried 2 of them, one was rancid, so maybe you better be carfull when trying this beer

A very pleasant Belgian that was very enjoyable and drinkable and a good choice with dinner. I highly recommend this one to those who like the Belgian styled beers. It poured an average sized tan head with fine-small bubbles that mostly dissipated during the course of my rating. The body had a lot of lively carbonation, it was cloudy and the hue was orange/brown. The nose consisted of caramel, malt, some fruitiness and alcohol. The flavor was smooth and I could taste the alcohol in this beer which isn't a bad thing. The palate was smooth as silk and light bodied. This beer had a fair amount of lacing.

On tap at "Den Tatoverede Enke", Copenhagen. This is great stuff! Very malty and enjoyable with lots of dark fruits too. Perfectly served with a huge off-white and nicely clinging head.

What do i say here? This is a quad not a brune, not anythign even like a dubbel. Well if it is a brune then its the most complex brune in the world, as is refected in its alcohol content. Aroma is a yeast which i would normally associate with rochefort and st bernards, Overly dark fruits with candy sugar rasisns and malt malt malt. Taste is very similar with maybe some almond character too and a great long finish. Im very close to asking wither this is rochefort 8, in a different bottle, otherwise i think its my second top rated brune, and one to get again foresure.

I greatly enjoyed this beer, not just for the flavour but its body -- big, fizzy bubbles kind of like an ice cream float. The smell was weak and a little unpleasant, but it certainly doesn’t match the wonderful, clean taste of this fine brew.

Dark reddish brown beer with big malt brown head. Tasted as keg in the Leopold Bar in Brugge. Superb sweet malt with masses of fruit, deep chewey strong beer. Great start to a weekend in Brugge.
