COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
n the 80’s the interest for traditional regional beers increased. Véronique, daughter of Henri IV, launched a new special beer in 1981. It was a blond beer of high fermentation. The first time it was brewed it was for the inauguration of the Saint-Arnold statue in Bruges. Saint-Arnold is the patron of the brewers … However, the beer was a success and the Mayor asked for it to be served at receptions in the townhall. The beer was a bit stronger than other beers and that is why it got the appropriated name of ‘Straffe Hendrik’ (Strong Henri). In 1988 Riva NV took over the beer brand. Straffe Hendrik have been brewed by Riva in Bruges until 2002.

Dark reddish brown beer with big malt brown head. Tasted as keg in the Leopold Bar in Brugge. Superb sweet malt with masses of fruit, deep chewey strong beer. Great start to a weekend in Brugge.

UPDATED: OCT 10, 2007 Garrafa, 750 ml. Coloração preta avermelhada, turva, com um creme bege consistente e persistente. Notas de frutas vermelhas e caramelo, com final seco. Carbonatação alta. Encorpada, mas com boa drinkability. Um pouco mais leve que as demais brune.

An excellent belgian ale. Great pour resulting in a thick white head. Has a great scent with strong hoppy flavor. An great taste is perfect with its smooth feel.

Pours deep red-brown with bountiful tan head that settles slowly and coats the glass with glorious lace. Aromas of sour citrus and mango yeastiness. Some earthy, almost hay-like aromas, and a hint of dried papaya as it warms. Soft lemony malt flavors. Just a hint of something metalic in the finish. Dry and delicate on the palate. The only hint of the strength is the warming sensation in my chest. Thanks alaskawarren for the great souvenir!

Deep nut brown colour, nice thick head. Big roasted malty nose. Flavour is malty and has an almost bitter caramel sweetness. On the downside there’s a tiny bit of an aniseed aftertaste but that’s easily replaced with another mouthfull.

On tap. Deep red/brown beer, big off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, lots of brown sugar, some alcohol. Taste is soft and rather sweet, caramel, dark fruits, some roasted malts. Well balanced sweetness. Creamy mouthfeel. A personal favourite.

Had this on a recent trip to Brugge, Belgium at a local bar (De Verloren Hoek) off the beaten path near the windmill on the north side of town frequented by the locals. Wonderful and friendly staff and recommended this locally brewed beer (on tap by the way). Probably my favorite beer of the entire journey around Belgium. I wish it was available in the USA. The blonde was also available but did not have the complexity of taste as the brown.

On tap at the brewery. Dark reddish brown w/ creamy brown head. Aroma indicates that it is malty and probably pretty "big." Initial tastes show very thick, sweet and rich. Hops are present, but floral and not bitter at all. Beer feels very belgian. Sweet, big, complex and red. Very very good.

Beautiful red-amber color. Nice spicy and malty aroma, good full malty flavor; caramel; sweet. The keyword is FULL. Not complex but satisfying: I like it!

malty sweet, bit of sourness - especially on the nose. toffee, very dark candy sugar little bit of a buttery note. touch of fruit. cloudy red-brown color. little syrupy - but enough hopping to make it reasonably well balanced. very good.
