3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Wiseblood (700) - Clarksville, Tennessee, USA - AUG 3, 2003
On tap at the brewery.
Rich head with a piney, hoppy aroma, and a trace of live yeast. Rich malt and orange-fruit flavor. Smooth, with a clear hit of alcohol and some yeast. Tangy hops spread to become clearer at the end, where the alcohol makes itself felt, followed by a quite bitter finish and strong aftertaste.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Hansen (4227) - Assentoft, DENMARK - JUL 27, 2003
I don't know if I like it or not. It has a lot of things in it that's difficult to describe. Some tart sour, some wood.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 LINKBREW (101) - Santee, California, USA - JUL 22, 2003
Light amber color, big white head. Malty and fruity aromas. Lightly sweet malt and light hop flavor. Good beer.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 schepers (32) - Limburg, NETHERLANDS - JUL 17, 2003
Clear yellow-amber color, thick foam head that stays for a while. Smells fruity and spicey. In both the smell and taste there is some honey. Not to heavy alcohol taste.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 JorisPPattyn (6428) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - JUL 15, 2003
(Fairly aged sample) Colour: clear light-amber. Thick creamy head, quite stable. Nose: straw, spicey, coriander, a bit fruity. Some caramel, figs. Cloying sweet taste, syrupy, toffee. Vague spicey notes. Some burnt malts as well. Liqueurish finish. Cloying mouthfeel, quite some alcohol. Again some fruitiness at the very end. Last quarter of the contents resembles yeast starter. Warming, it gets frankly undrinkable. Maybe I'm biased, but I recall 't Hamerken tripel (jet black) as superior to this 'Brugse' descendant. This, anyway, is too sweet for a real tripel, just not dry enough. If you're in for sweet strong beers, this is it.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Perkeo (321) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUL 9, 2003
Amber ale with orange highlights, good lace on this one. Cigar box aromas mingle with slight butterscotch and bubblegum, a little spicey, some earthiness. Flavor is pleasant and tangy with slight acidity and a typical marsmallow carbonique' character typical of the style. Good triple.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 ante (3375) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - JUL 7, 2003
(Bottle) Cloudy and amber colored with a huge longlasting head. Aroma of toffee, some fruits and pepper. Taste is smooth and creamy. Burnt sugar, toffee, alcohol with some bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with some citrus and warming alcohol. A really nice brew.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 PeterHollander (20) - Hengelo, NETHERLANDS - JUL 3, 2003
UPDATED: JUL 6, 2003 Bottle. Slightly darker in colour than most tripel-style beers, more a light amber colour. The taste is the other surprise. Not dry and hoppy like most abbey tripels but leaning toward the sweet. My tip for enjoying this beer: After pouring the beer slowly into the glass, add some of the yeast deposit to the beer. Your tastebuds will thank you.
