DanBerg (59), Alkmaar, Netherlands Dec 13, 2006 Drank on tap at Kafe Belgie, Utrecht. Blond Belgian Ale with a nice colour and average size of head. It tasted a bit like a Belgian white instead of an Ale, due because of the citrus aroma and fresh taste. Will drink this again. Pours golden with a robust head and lots of floating gelatinous matter. The aroma is crisp, laced with citrus but dominated by grassy belgian yeast tones. The flavor is excellent, ever-so-slightly sweet on the front of the sip, gently rustic, accented with citrus, beautifully dry on the finish. The big drawback is that it is really rather simple and light on the front side of each sip. 7/3/8/4/14=3.6
Still, I’m a bit surprised by the low ratings that this one has received. For me, it encompasses much of the appeal of a good tripel in a much more quaffable 6% brew. I’ll be buying this one again.
Addendum Upon a second tasting just two weeks later, I now undeerstand the lower ratings that this one has been drawing. It’s a bit sweet on the front, a bit too heavy on the wit-like fruity esters. I’d have given this one maybe a 3.2 or 3.3 if I’d rated from scratch, though I’ll only bump the original 3.6 down by 1 point. footbalm (1218), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Dec 2, 2006 Bottle from Greens in Atlanta. Nice store by the way. Massive explosion and left a large part of this on the counter. But what was left had a rather pleasant nose of spices and some exotic fruit.A bit too carbonated for my tongue but that dodn’t take away from the taste as there wasn’t much anyway. MPA (482), Nørrebro(formerly Aalborg), Denmark Dec 1, 2006 Bottle. Golden with off white head. Yeast, sweetness, banana, fruit(salat), apple in aroma. Flavour of yeast, apple, sweetness, banana, toffee and nice bitter finish with a touch of malt. jaymobrown (1344), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 27, 2006 Light orange hazy glow with a smallish white head. Faint orange peel nose with a slight hint of lemon. Fizzy mouthfeel. Yeast, orange, lemon zest, slight bitter, floral flavors. Refreshing, light, and clean drinking. bhensonb (4188), Woodland, California, USA Nov 13, 2006 Aroma of citrus and yeast. Very clean aroma. Perhaps a bit of lemon. Light brassy color. Substantial head. It almost started with apple, but that was not it. Perhaps a hint of ginger. Very light on the hops, the finish is a bit sweetish. Perhaps a bit of banana-ish hefeweisen in the finish. Very nice. Moderately complex. Moderate mouthfeel. Not a heavy drink. Tmoney99 (4661), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Nov 12, 2006 Bottle. Poured hazy orange with an average fizzy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate sweet tart citrus aroma. Light to medium body with a thin texture and soft carbonation. Light sweet citrus flavor with a light sweet finish of short duration. StueyD (590), King’s Lynn, Norfolk, Norfolk, England Nov 4, 2006 A light golden orange coloured beer with a thk, but frothy white head. A sweet malty nose with a touch of wheat and a hint of hop. The taste is dry with a fizzy mouthfeel. Sweet biscuity malt flavour, with a wheaty, cereal taste that is accompanied by a touch od crisp hop in the finish.
