In 2005 Xavier Vanneste, son of Mrs Véronique Maes, renovated and restarted the old brewery which had been in the family since 1856. He launched Brugse Zot, a new beer with a unique recipe. Today Brugse Zot is the only beer brewed in Bruges’ town centre!
The people of Bruges are known as "Brugse Zotten" (Bruges Fools), also known as "Brugse Jonckers"

Hazy gold beer, good size pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and minerally crisp. Airy dry pale malts, trace of cream. Sweetish banana esters and a very light touch of sweetish fruits and citrus. Airy dry finish. Okay.

Ruikt aangenaam bierig. Goed gebalanceerd in smaak. Geen extreme zoetjes of bittertjes.

Light golden, slightly hazy, with a big frothy white head. Foamy in the mouth with a nice bit of carbonation. Aroma of yeast, pepper, clove, dough. Tastes of clove, spice and light citrus fruit. Typically Belgian - I like it.

Bottle from JSG Wine Merchants, Hills Rd, Cambridge. Yellow, very cloudy. A fair bit of tick but quickly dissipating white head. Smells of lemon, kumquat, clove and bready malt. The aroma is lighter than I expected but it’s still gorgeous. Sweet, easy taste. Citrus and spice (clove, cinnamon) very much in the fore. Light to medium body, warming alcoholic palette. This is a joy to drink.

Drinking from a 33 cl bottle. A sweet aroma, nothing special. The clear orange beer has a large white head. In the taste hop, sweets and alcohol. Sour comes up when the beer warms up. Medium carbonated.

Belle mousse. Goût houblonné très léger qui s’accentue en arrière goût. Bière qui reste légère. Classique sans intérêt particulier, mais qui se boit très facilement.
