3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
11.2 oz bottle from Wilbur’s; 2010 vintage. Aroma: finger of off-white head that disappears immediately and does not even last as a film, amber brown color, cloudy. Aroma: molasses, prune, light licorice, nutty. Palate: dry finish, lively carbonation, thin texture into oily. Taste: sweet malt and molasses, ends with light fruity sweetness of prune. Overall, very different, super carbonated, but taste is unique. The finish is a little light for how malty sweet the front is. Likely has a lot to do with vintage.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
I am a bit unclear about this "Saint-Martin" abbey beer range: is this the same beer as the Saint-Martin Lumière d’Hiver that was in existence till 2007? I suspect it is, and the Lumière d’Hiver has been replaced as the winter beer in its range by the slightly stronger Saint-Martin de Noël. This one shows a very thick, rocky, dense, tanned head which eventually collapses but leaves a good lacing on the edge; colour a very dark wine red, near blackish, misty. Powerful aroma of port wine, milk chocolate, coffee, almond, overripe pear, coriander, cinnamon, banana liqueur, butter and a whiff of bay leaves. Sweet taste, dark fruits, port, somewhat oily mouthfeel, in the middle a deep dark maltiness with chocolate and caramel notes, dryish spiciness, some candi sugar, finish roasted bitter with a peppery hoppiness and warm, a bit astringent and therefore insufficiently hidden alcohol.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From notes on bottle consumed Feb. 2012.
Pours a clear dark mahogany with a large tan head. The head has good retention and leaves exceptional lacing.
Aroma: a very appealing aroma of dark fruits, baked bread and toffee.
T: Lots of dark fruit! Sweet, but just the right level to compliment the other flavors. Slightly spicy with hints of roasted nuts and a trace of pepper. A fine lingering aftertaste of toasted grain and spices and dark fruits, featuring plums and dates.
M: excellent carbonation, giving this a lively yet creamy smooth feel. Medium body.
O: exceptionally enjoyable; higher ABV is well hidden. Nearly world-class Belgian Bruin, similar to Maredsous.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with a small head, no lacing. Very nice aroma of plum, anise, bread, cherries, alcohol, and toffee. Taste is medium sweet with a light bitterness and lightly sour. Very soft on the palate, not highly carbonated, medium body, sticky texture, and sweet finish. This is an above-average Belgian dubbel due to the nice aroma and taste.
