Cask at the NWAF, Manchester, 2012. General’s gathered in their masses...this one had a nose of molasses...as well as currants and sweet spice. Dark fruit approach, malty sweet flavour. Fruity finish. Heavy stuff.

Cask conditioned at The Wellington, Birmingham. Black with cream head. A strong medicinal note with a really sweet character, tongue coating and a strong fruitiness. A bit of a struggle.

From cask at Kelham Island Tavern. Pours dark brown to black with a small off white to tan head. Aroma is roasted malty. Mild acidic and roasted malt flavoured. Somewhat alcoholic too. Acidic and dark malty finish. Not really my thing.

[cask at the Brunswick Inn, Derby] A dark, black viscous brew this one – got that comforting treacle-effect on the palate when it slides down. It really doesn’t taste as strong as it is, although there are some alcohol notes in the mix along with the classic strong porter flavours. I got more coffee than chocolate alongside the malt, no hops to speak of. If you want a decent bookend to finish a night in the Brunswick, you could do far worse than one of these... [21042009]

5th December 2008. Very dark brown stout. Soft and rich with a slight undercurrent of cherry-raspberry. Dry malt finish that is just slightly bitter. The fruitiness makes this very drinkable. No need to be Paranoid at all!
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DruncanVeasey (5145) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - FEB 8, 2010
Cask handpull, The Brunswick Inn, Derby. Heavy liquorice looks edged with ruby under a fine, yellow-tan collar. Generous roasted aroma with a deep cafetiere smokiness and coal. Punchy dry roast, some scorched plastic and toast; definite liquorice, hint of apple, bitter cocoa, ashtray. Some roasted (carbonised) nuttiness in the aftertaste. Lacks a bit of body and depth at 6%- full of roast but edging towards thinness and astringency.Too much of a good thing: burnt wood.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Papsoe (22948) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - JAN 18, 2010
Cask. Pours a very dark brown with a vague orange hue and a small off-white head. Lightly burned malt in the nose, perhaps a whiff of butter also. Full-bodied, rich in sweet, hard roasted malts and sweet dried fruit. Again almost no bitterness - Brunswick seems to be afraid of hops! 170110
