COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a traditional Bavarian Schwarzbier style with a deep color and a smooth rich flavor. Specially roasted malts give the black color and mild roastiness to this beer while Munich, Caramel, and Honey malts add depth and character to the malt flavor. Moderately hopped with noble aroma varieties to achieve a perfect balance and a clean finish this beer is a perfect complement to smoked, grilled, and roasted foods, flavorful meats and cheeses or chocolate desserts.

aroma is roasted cacao and mildly mildew-y. tastes is what you would expect, lots of cocoa and light coffee notes. a hint of tobacco and smoke in there too. a little of an oily finish on the tongue. i like that it finishes lighter than a stout or porter would. then again, it doesnt make much of an impression either.

a very fine beer with a definite nutty feel to it. only slightly toasted but it has a great flavor of malts and the right amount of hops. brings out a wide assortment of flavors that make it ideal for the cool autumn days.

Can shared by a friend. Pours a hazy red color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of nutty notes and caramel. The taste is tart malts, berries and nutty notes. Medium bodied. Seems like its a bit off.

Can. I don’t understand where the sour came from with some other listers. My had nothing sour about it. Nice dark brown with hints of copper when held to the light. Nice burnt nut aroma and a dark toast taste. Great beer.

Tall can. Dark brown, thick looking beer with a decent tan head. The aroma is a positive... Malty, rich, some caramel , chocolate. That is the end of what is good. The beer initially tastes okay in the mouth but releases a strong sour off note with an unpleasant finish. I did not enjoy at all ... Almost a drain pour, but the aroma and appearance are positives.

Can at home from Cask P&K. Poured a dark brown, with an average beige head. Not too much to it, bit of roast, hint of smoke, but otherwise fairly bland.

16oz can courtesy of Dschiller. Pours an attractive, true to style brown-black, with a thin beige head. Interesting soapy toffee aroma. Relatively solid example of the style. Really easy to drink, rather one-dimensional. The honey malt complements the darker malts really well, making me think this would be a great firkin beer. Grows on you. Lacks complexity, a little watery. Overall a decent beer...but seems a little off.

poor is a thin dark without much head. smell is a little roasted with a little sweet. taste is like licking the inside of tin can roasted in a fire washed in miller lite.

7/26/11. 16oz can. Dark brown pour, lots of red when held to the light, under a small tan head that fades fast and laces a teensy bit. A bit of chocolate and roast in the aroma but it’s loaded with diacetyl - huge buttery mess. Light chocolate and roasted malt flavor... easy-drinking schwarz but even the flavor is buttery diacetyl. Man, this is a messup.

Appearance: Slips out a very dark brown body with a moderately-sized, light beige head. Smell: Malty tones of caramel, honey, shaved chocolate and mild coffee with an undercurrent of soured, spoiled black currant jam dosed with licorice. Taste: Chocolate, roast and with a vague hint of caramel. Middling sweetness. Touch of licorice. Burnt dark fruits, also some canned cherries, with a sharp noted sourness throughout. Rather unclean. Slightly earthy. Low bitterness. More of the same onward, but the repellent sourness is a deal breaker for me. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-low carbonation. Fairly smooth though. Overall: Drain pour. Unfortunately, the soured infectious qualities deeply mar what potentially could’ve been a nice schwarz in a can. Better luck next time, Buckbean!
