2.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
From a can, thanks to ole College Buddy Ken! And Tina! Poured Black with a tan creamy head that didnít quite last as long as I hoped. Started out real nice! Aroma was of roasted dark malts. Started out tasting rather nice with rich malts, but almost got vinegary after pouring into a glass and breathing a few minutes. Thatís when my ratings started dropping! Too Bad!

The beer poured great a very black color to it, a tan colored one finger head and great lacing on the glass. The beer has a very strong coffee smell up front but then you get a roasted malt and slight caramel finish on it. The taste is similar to the smell with heavy coffee up front but there is also a great nutty blend in it that gets followed up by the roasted malt and caramel flavor. The mouthfeel is okay with a bitter coffee flavor that lingers around, somewhat dry and slghtly bitter. Overall, ths was a decent black lager, a little too powerful with the coffee flavor but decent none the less.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can:   Dark cola, brownish edges, thing sudsy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Soft roasted malt nose, slight lactose, a little bit of fusels and apple skin.   Roasty up front, black malts, soft bakers chocolate too.
Backside seems a little thin.   Finishes quick.   A bit more light fruit skin on the tongue.   Doesnít last long on the tongue.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes with a roasty lactose like sweetness,
with hints of bakers chocolate.   Tiz okay, but it doesnt stick around long.   A lighter example.

2.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Can from Kris Wines, Holloway, London. Black with a reddish tint and a decent head. The aroma is the highlight - smoky malt and fruitcake promise good things to come; but they lie: the overall experience is like drinking water from a glass that previously contained stout. Very slight coffee malt but no duration or strength at all. This website suggests it has been retired; the contents of my glass seem to indicate it hasnít - but it should be.

1 pint can served in a Unibroue snifter. Near black with orange-brown highlights at the edges and a small, delicate head. Smells fruity but not in a very attractive way. The fruity, sour and flowery taste is a bit like there is some saison in with a black lager. Something may be wrong here, and not just a departure from style, so Iíll try to re-rate this down the road.

2.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Can. Pours dark brown with thin, fizzy beige head; short retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is roast and caramel malts, earthy hops, corn, figs, and soap. Flavor is burnt and bland and extremely thin with a painful aftertaste. Light body and low carbonation.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Can. Pours clear dark brown with a small, fizzy light tan head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is light toast and cookie malt, plums and dates with light earthy hops. Flavor is malt dominant with light hops and bitterness, somewhat sour with a dry finish. Light body and medium carbonation. Probably a bit old and poorly handled.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Black with fine ring of tan head. Smells of raisin, fig and cocoa dominate. Hmm, has a very tart mid to back, almost like some lacto infection. Tastes like an interesting "Belgian dark ale."

Pint can. Poured medium-deep brown with a short-lived tan head. The aroma picked up sweet coffee, licorice, and lightly-smoked dark fruits.. some odd funky accents.. decent balance overall. The flavor found sour, roasty chocolate and generic black malts throughout.. again a touch of smoke.. finished with tacky semi-sweet chocolates and a pinch of darker honey. Light-medium bodied and again a bit sour on the palate.. not the smoothest flow.. just OK overall.

Taken from old notes. Dark pour with a thick head. Sour notes on the nose and not much else. Taste is the same with some mild hops. Not sure if this was a bad can, but I canít imagine this is what it was supposed to taste like.
