2013 vintage, on tap at the brewery. Pours honey-gold, no head. Aroma is bready malt, caramel, green apple, butterscotch. Complex flavour profile. Malt-heavy and richly sweet. Subtle and smooth, by barley wine standards -- the higher ABV really creeps up on you. A solid dessert beer.

Poured from 650mL bottle (lists 9.5% alc./vol.). Clear amber colour with very quickly dissipating white head. First hit of aroma is green apple, also some molasses and malty caramel. Taste is a boozy sweet syrup, quite dry and mild.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver, 10% ABV
Amber color, hazy, with small compact head. Light aroma of malt, caramel and candi sugar. Good body strength, round mouthfeel, with good caramel flavor, some malt, a hint of fudge; correct bitterness, with light vanilla and butter finish. A bit perfumy too. Balanced final, medium sweet, a bit nutty.
Pleasant English style Barley Wine.

(Bottle) Pours dark copper. The aroma holds potato flour, nutmeg, grains and over ripe dark/dried fruits. The flavour is medium to heavily sweet and light to medium bitter with some alcohol warmth. Tones of grains, fruits and spices. The mouthfeel is sticky and numbing. Sweetish sugar finish. Medium to full bodied.

Bottle from Brewery Creek in Vancouver. 2009 Vintage. Pours sparkling burnt copper with a spare rocky off-white head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, nutty, cookie), heavy hops (pine, floral), average yeast (dough) with notes of butter, apple and honey. Full bodied, alcoholic texture, lively carbonation and a bitter finish. Moderate sweetness, acidity and bitterness; heavy spicy palate, roasted caramel malt, floral and alcoholic flavour.

Bottle, pours dark golden amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma of apple, caramel malt, orange peel and a sweet & sour scent. Flavour of brown sugar, caramel malt, maple syrup and citrus. Low carbonation, sweet & sour finish. The best I’ve had from Swans.

Bottle. Slight butterscotch & burnt malt aroma. Dark copper brown with small head that disappears quickly. Carbonation is on the low side. Malt sweetness is overwhelming, like a mouthful of honey. It feels thick and chewy. There is a considerable resinous, piney hop presence. However, the malt overpowers it. I must admit that the alcohol was well masked.

Bottle:   Bright caramel, orange hued, thin sudsy off-white head, dies rather quickly, sparce lacing.   Candied orange peel on the nose, slight acidity, with a little bit of funked cheese.   Bright yet sweet citrus peel flavors, decent malt base, pale caramel, a little sticky, without a lot of hop bite.   Pleasant to drink, with a definite warming as it goes down.   Not alcoholic for being 11%.   Slightly buttery on the backside, but its very slight.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Better than I anticipated.   For a high ABV Barley Wine, it drinks like its much lighter.   Tasty!   Thanks Todd!

2009 vintage bottle in Vancouver. Big aroma of brown sugar and molassas. Not much carbonation; rather still, murky bronze colouring. Flavour is way syrupy sweet...possibly from the land of maple sugar? Not my favorite for a barley wine style.

Bottle from Brewery Creek in Vancouver, BC. Pretty pour - a dark amber with a decent, beige head. Smells overwhelmingly sweet. Extremely malt-heavy - the only counter I can smell is booze. Candied sweet potatoes, cloves, cinnamon, caramel, brown sugar, and some citrus. Yipe - flavor actually follows suit, and doesn’t let on any bitterness until there’s just a tinge in the aftertaste. Seriously, this is like tossing marshmallow-laden sweet potatoes and a spoonful of molasses in a blender and then carbonating it. Really bizarre flavor, and I can’t get used to it. This desperately, desperately needs some hops to dry it out.
