Buckerfields Swans Oatmeal Stout

Enjoyed right at the source, i.e., the bar at Swan’s Hotel on a damp, dark Victoria day (less than 30 minutes walking after downing another stout at Spinnakers!). Not much head with this one, what head there was being a tan in hue. Aroma was delicate and featured some roasted/toasted malts and coffee, but (sadly) no dark chocolate. The taste was primarily of burnt coffee and the aforementioned malts. Nice and all that, but not as good as Spinnakers. Mouthfeel tended to be on the thin side, with a small sweet note at the finish.

Glass, 5 ounces, draught, at the pub, savoured on April 29, 2009; eye: black, clear, no effervescence, tiny ring of tan head, light lacing; nose: light roasted malt, lactic, chocolate milk, slight hops; mouth: light roasted malt, lactic, chocolate milk, slight hops, finale in roasted malt with good presence of chocolate milk, medium body, light astringency, light acridness, lightly bitter, average carbonation, creamy texture, a bit thin; overall: correct FRANÇAIS Verre, 5 onces, en fût, bue sur place, savourée le 29 avril 2009; œil : noire avec des reflets bourgogne, claire, pas d’effervescence, très petit anneau de mousse fauve, légère dentelle; nez : léger malt torréfié, lactique, lait au chocolat, très léger houblon; bouche : léger malt torréfié, lactique, lait au chocolat, très léger houblon, finale en malt torréfié avec bonne présence de lait au chocolat, corps moyen, légère astringence, légère âcreté, légèrement amère, carbonatation moyenne, texture crémeuse, un peu mince; en résumé : correct

Bomber. Pours hazy dark brown with a thin and fading head that leaves a trace of lace. Nice chocolate/molasses/oatmeal aroma. Medium body, somewhat creamy with minimal carbonation. Sweet taste of molasses and coffee, with a barely piney edge. Dry finish.

Deep dark brown, short-lived brown head, no lace. Pruney, liqueury aroma, dark chocolate. Bitter chocolate and coffee, with a fruit-acid tartness in the finish. Moderate bitter finish. Smooth medium-bodied mouthfeel. Nice.

Draught at the brewpub, hand pulled
Almost black color. It has the aroma of the coffee brewed in the office. And the flavor too. Just a bit sweeter, less dry, maybe more fruity. Very common.

Deep dark brown with a thin cream colored head. Aroma is chocolate, cream, roasty with dried fruit. Taste is also chocolate, cream with dried fruit and oatmeal.

Bottle shared with tupalev. My bottle. Deep ruby-brown with a small off-white head. Roasty aroma with notes of toasted oatmeal, cocoa, and a bit of sourness. Medium bodied. Flavour is roasty, pleasant, but not as complex or full as I like from my stouts. Best before date was the week we drank it, so maybe it was a bit past it’s prime?

Bottle shared wit and courtesy of GregClow. Nice dry oatmeal aroma. Very dark brown, small white head. Decent oatmeal taste, some hops present as well. Not bad, not great, drinkable.
