When I tried this at a local beer festival years ago it was one of the best offerings. It was creamy and smooth. Rich but not full-bodied if that makes sense. However, I have not tried it in years and will re-rate after visiting the brewpub in Victoria.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
7/14/07 On draught at the brewery. Aroma is roast malt forward with chocolate and dark dried fruit. Appearance is dark brown, thin looking, with NO HEAD. Flavor is very thin with some black patent bittering mixed with roast, slightly sour, light caramel and alcohol. Kind of strange for a 5.4% beer. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, warm, with no carb texture and a dry finish. Overall, this is a big let down from the aroma; just too thin and the weird alcoholic character doesn’t make this pleasant.

8/24/2007: Swans Oatmeal Stout is dark brown and reminds me of liquid milk chocolate. It has a a large and long-lasting tan head. The creamy aroma is lacking, but the fnutty and dry roasty malt flavor make up for it a little bit. The flavor also has a dusting of dark or unsweetened chocolate/cocoa powder and some watery oatmeal tones. The body of this beer is a real let down since it is only medium-light to medium. That’s way too light for a stout! This beer drank more like a dark lager than an oatmeal stout. It was just too light and not enough body for me to take it seriously as a stout.
Draught sample at Swans Brewpub in Victoria, BC, Canada. Rating #24 for this beer...

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample at the Hotel. Very dark mahogany. No head, flat looking. Aromatic; alcohol and nuts. Smells like a good brown. Oily coffee flavour. Strong espresso. Plain. Lots of alcohol in the body and a tingle in my nose.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Butterscotch is very strong in the aroma. It overshadows the dark malts and chocolate. Opaque brown body is topped by a low, cream coloured head that recedes to a partial cover with some patchy lace. Buttery character to the strong dark malt flavour. Bitterness is a bit harsh. Quite thin and astringent light-medium body with fair but short lived carbonation. Bottle sampled with Altair, beerbuzzmontreal, Cathschlag, Glouglouburp, Goldorak, MartinT, muzzlehatch and Yowie.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Draught sample at Swans Hotel. Mild coffee-chocolate with balsamic tang to the nose. Is it the water here in Victoria that so many of these beers have this aroma? Hint of smoke. A little sweet and not much else. Fairly bland aroma for a stout. Dark dark brown clear with no head. Medium-light bodied with little carbonation. Starts with coffee-chocolate malt and light tang from who knows what that is a bit balsamic-y. Light smoky-bitter finish with light hoppy tang. Weak bitter-tangy after.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
My Bottom Line:
The butterscotch component of this Sweet Stout starts off as an able companion to the crunchy roastiness, but builds with every sip and its exaggerated essence soon overrides pleasure.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the darkest brown.
-The roasty dryness aptly cuts the most of the caramel sweetness.
-This roastiness lingers nicely, even bringing dark chocolate into the mix.
-Carbonation is soft, and would’ve worked with the healthy body.
-Supporting hops are found within the back roastiness.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Sampled from 650 ml bottle in Montreal on Glouglouburp’s roof at the tiggmtl-returns/MartinT leaves for Japan party, June 17 2007. Opaque inkiness even in the bright sun, a bit of off-white head....big chocolate-roasty aroma, fairly forward and muscular, but diacetyl is sneaking in behind....sweet, sugary (maple), completely unbalanced on the tongue, little-to-no roast, the saccharine qualities overwhelm and there is no escape from a toothache here....dull mouthfeel, low carbonation.....well, it was better than the Hockley that preceded it, I’ll give it that.
