Pours a clean golden yellow with one finger of offwhite head. NOse is soapy and poorly hopped, rough and unrefined. Soapy flavor and rough hop bitterness with a mild citrusy sweetness. Needs polishing.

Bottle shared by Glenn. Im a drunk like paul is sometimes when he is rating beers. i mean paul. pours deep orange amber with a small white head. Nose of pine, cararmel malt. Solid beer. A little sweet at first with a bitter finish. Im guessing this had a little age on it.

10-Nov-06 (22-oz bottles: Obtained in trade with bkelley68, thanks Brian!) I have 2004 and 2005 bottlings to compare against each other (sorry, no 2006), and I’m extremely impressed by the manner in which this beer has aged. Both bottles feature a bright, citrusy hoppiness which, frankly, I expected would have faded long ago. But no, the hops are still at the forefront, providing a persistent, medium-strong hop bitterness from the first sip all the way through to the long, extended finish. Hops are certainly grapefruity, but also present a moderate piney character as well. Pale malts seem to just provide a substantial but not overtly flavorful base, thus allowing the hops be showcased. A moderate, orange-citrus fruitiness is present, most notably in the finish. Malts are slightly earthy and a "pleasant" oxidation are beginning to emerge in the older bottle, but the hops remains the focal point, a pretty amazing feat if you ask me. I have to point out the hint of apple skins in the newer bottle, but it’s minor enough to overlook at this point. Both beers are medium-full in body, but the carbonation level in the older beer is pretty soft, whereas the carbonation with the new bottle is quite lively, to the point of being what I’d consider "expansive" in the mouth. It’s a fairly dry, well-attenuated double IPA, which aids in drinkability, and the dusty, mineraly mouthfeel is, as always, very appealing to me. The nose is lacking in hops for both beers, the older bottle showing its age with slightly earthy malts and strong fruitiness standing out, and hops barely detectable. Unfortunately, the newer beer is disappointing me with signs of acetaldehyde, the apple-skin scent being the single aroma that jumps out at me. The colors are quite similar: a cloudy, translucent, orange-amber color. Head size and retention are where the bottles diverge, the older bottle generating barely more than a filmy layer, but the newer bottle producing copious amounts of off-white foam that requires an emergency sip to (almost) prevent overflow and takes many minutes to settle from the inch-plus-tall initial pour to a more manageable, quarter-inch layer. The dense blanket of lace is very impressive. Overall, though ’76 tends to be less malty than San Diego examples of this style, this is still a very good beer. Were it not for the mild presence of acetaldehyde in the newer bottle, I’d be extolling the superb brewmanship of this beer. As it is, the concern about possible sanitation issues curbs my enthusiasm slightly. But the 2004 bottle is a pretty superb specimen exhibiting wonderful aging characteristics and I’ve greatly enjoyed this Buckeye offering.

Pours a slightly hazy orange with a touch of white lacing down the glass. Big citrus hop aroma, orange and honey in the nose. Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel. Great balance between the sweetness in the malt, juicy hops and a soft bitterness. I enjoyed this one. Unique among IIPAs.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bluejacket74 (716) - Reynoldsburg, Ohio, USA - NOV 27, 2010
22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a hazy golden/orange color with about an inch frothy off-white head. Head retention is excellent, with a good amout of lacing. Nice hops in the aroma, it smells mostly like citrusy (grapefruit, tropical fruit, pineapple) hops, along with some pine hops and caramel malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s the addition of some orange peel. The pine and citrusy hop flavors seem about even in the taste. Nice bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit creamy and slick, and is well carbonated. Drinkability is good, it’s certainly easy enough to drink. In the future I’d like to try this brew a little fresher, but I thought it was good enough right now!

Big ups to w113raf for this and some Ohio love. Poured the from a bottle and this thing came off HOT!! lost half of it in the sink from the over-carbo action. Once it settled the pour was a lighter orange with a massive head (mentioned above). The aroma was a very bitter toffee with some fruitiness on the finish. The taste was big and tangy with some hopppy punch on the finish. Can’t say this was that drinkable, not a fan of the tang, but still ok.

Served from a 22 oz bottle from Jungle Jim’s. The appearance is a clear pale gold with a small lacing white head. Floral hop esters to the nose with a nice spice note. Nice creamy floral hop flavors with a mild bittering aftertaste. Mouth is creamy and refreshing. A simple but well done DIPA, some times less really is more.

Huge crazy foam. Kind of like a home brew. It even has the crazy bubbles after it’s been open for awhile. Big individual bubbles. Otherwise this is a very very good beer. Huge nose. grapefruit. Mango, pine. Very sweet. Soft on the palate. Tastes great, but very filling doe to all those bubbles. Gotta swirl a lot.

Pours a clear golden with huuuuge frothy egg shell head. Big citrusy hop aroma. Similar taste, some breadiness in the mix. Lots of carbonation. The malts don’t quite come though. Still damn good.j
