4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JoeMcPhee (6964) - Toronto, ON, - OCT 31, 2010
Tap at Beer Engine. Pale golden pour. The nose is great. Loads of bright fruity tropical hops. Bubble gum and fruit with a lot of soft spicy character. Bright and zesty with a lot of lemon peel, orange and grapefruit citrus and more zesty noble hoppiness as well. Herbal and chewy. Really delicious, hoppy and very complex. It’s definitely worth seeking out. One of the best of these Belgian IPAs I’ve had.

Not sure what’s going on with this one. Burnt honey booze and bublegum taste. Not good. Aroma of soapy, candy and smashed dirt and flowers. Low quaffability. Did not enjoy.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Pipper (325) - Ohio, USA - JUN 4, 2010
On draft at Beer Engine into snifter. Booze very upfront in flavor. Aroma pretty floral and the warming after effects just get warmer with time. Pretty orangey amber color with little carbonation and dry finish. Clean over the palate but almost a little harsh. Starts with a foam 1/4 inch head that deflates on contact. Lacing but no sticky or consistent. You get only a touch of the hops bitterness in the flavor and aroma.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Dogbrick (4828) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAY 30, 2010
Sample at the brewpub. The beer is a clear golden color with a thin and densely packed white head that burns away slowly. Spotty lacing. Aroma of mildly spiced hops, yeast and citrus. Medium body with flavors of citrusy hops, spice, yeast and some fruit. The finish is moderately hoppy with a lingering fruit and spice aftertaste. Above average overall.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Acetobacter (816) - Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 16, 2010
Enjoyed on tap at the Beer Engine in a whiskey snifter. The beer pours a medium orangish-golden color, with a small and quickly disappearing white head. Fruity Belgian esters greet the nose, followed by a more subdued level note of hops. The palate betrays the beer as a Belgian strong ale first and IPA second. Moderate yeast-derived esters hit the taste buds in the approach, dominating any other initial flavors. Some subtle hop flavor comes to the fore after the aforesaid, but hardly seems like the advertised 115 IBUs. Residual malt sweetness is moderate to high, and ultimately keeps the beer from standing with better examples of the style, which tend to exhibit late-palate dryness and resulting bitterness. However, alcohol is well-hidden. Overall, a good effort to brew a difficult style, but fairly average in total.
