This oatmeal stout is very easy to drink. The aroma is strong with chocolate, with very little coffee notes. Color is a bit on the lighter side, not quite black. Very smooth drinking. Lighter body than expected, but its ok. Slightly sweet finish. Slight earthiness from the hops. Pretty good for their first try. I would like it a bit fuller and a little more roasty.

On tap at the brewpub. Dark beer with a thin, disappearing beige head. Light roasted grain nose. Some molasses sweetness with a little Cola and roasted grains. There is some apple fruitiness with caramel and dead campfire. Tingly on the tongue. Okay stout.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Growler, pours dark brown, pretty much black with no head really, just a thin tan cap, looks still. Aroma is dark chocolate and mild coffee, roasty malts. Nice sweet and roasty balance between the coffee and chocolate flavors. Creamy palate from the oatmeal but it needed a bit more carbonation.

Draft. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Solid roasted coffee and chocolate malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium roasted malt flavor with a medium dark sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Half pint draft at the brewery tasting room in Buckeye Lake, Ohio. The pour is blackish brown with not much of a head. The aroma is a nice char roast, along with some malt brown sugar sweetness. The taste is the char, coffee with cream, mineral, and a touch of honey vanilla sweet. The palate is medium bodied, low carbonation level is pretty close to still. Nice roast character.

UPDATED: JUL 30, 2012 Re-rate. I said I’d give it another shot if I made it out there and here we are. There definitely was something up with the growler (or my palate) the first time because this was a much different experience. Dark brown pour with no head. Roasty and malty flavor with nice chocolate notes. Malty and chocolatey flavor with a bitter, roasty coffee finish. Good session stout.

Sample at the brewpub. The beer is a dark brownish-black color with a thin dense tan head that recedes slowly. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma with notes of malt and coffee. Light body with a toasted malt character and notes of milk chocolate and mild hops. The finish is malty with a mild coffee aftertaste. Decent overall.
