Abbey beer, ruby colour, top-fermentation beer, outstanding owing to its soft flavour and fantastic aroma. This beer’s name comes from the French Capuchins, who had a monastery in Budel at the beginning of the last century.

(30cl bottle, BB 12/2011) Pours a clear amber body with a spare off-white head. Aroma of raisins, curry, anise, and caramel. Flavor of raisins, caramel, toffee, and yeast.

Bottle at Arendsnest. Clear deep red brown beer with a good pale tan head. Creamy malt nose. Softish palate. Softish creamy malt. A little nutty with subtle fruit and a whisper of bubblegum. Semi soft and semi dry finish. Just a nice nutty malt beer that hangs together really well.

Pours out darker brown, a medium head that should hold some longer. Sweet smell of red fruits and caramel. Fruits, sweet caramel, malts at the taste.Prunes and raisins. Dry, a bit earthy, specially at the finish. Not my style of dubbel.

UPDATED: NOV 25, 2011 Dark-red fruity collor. Smell of sweet and bitter. As long as I remember, this is one of my favorites. Licht bitterness, abbey-style beer but much sweeter. It is a pitty that it is also a bit watery. Because it also has this typical strong taste in the background. Do no try this one with heavy food, otherwise the taste is too subtle.

Bottle: Nice light brown foamy head. Clear brown color. Smell is a very good mix of brown sugar, crisped and toasted malts, hints of hops, dark fruit (prunes, raisin) and spices. Taste is soft on the tongue but full taste of sugars, malts, fruits, roasted ingredients. Just slightly bitter, more sweet than bitter. Hints of oatmeal and iron. Nicely balanced.

[330ml bottle, Beers of Europe, King’s Lynn] Dark brown almost black pour, thin off-white head. Big malty aromas and then flavours coming off. There’s a slight sharpness in the aftertaste. Pretty rich, there’s a creaminess to it as well. As it warms the flavours develop further – complex malts with a hint of spices and that mild tartness. Pretty complex stuff. [15/08/2010]

30cl bottle poured into a Rochefort Trappist glass. Clear ruby with a small off-white head. Aroma is dark fruit. Flavor is very sweet, dark fruit. Full body. Medium to light carbonation. A bit of alcohol in the short finish. Decent but too sweet for my taste.

A fairly dull beer by most standards. Colour is a nice reddish brown, but head is disappointingly fleeting, and ends up looking like sea scum tossed on the waves. Aroma is pleasant, but not outstanding, with some nice caramel and black pepper notes present. Mouthfeel is decent, but a little thin. Flavour is nice - good complex malt, with a caramelly moreishness about it. The taste saves this beer really. I wouldn’t order it especially, but nor would I be horribly disappointed to find it on a guest tap somewhere.
