UPDATED: JAN 11, 2012 Deep brown topped by a light creamy head. The nose is rich and toasty with a caramel, vanilla and chocolate notes including roasted malt aroma. It gives a bitter taste with spicy and herbal flavour. Body is medium, carbon high. Coffee and chocolate with dark fruits on palate. Bitter aftertaste. B@H

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2012 Roasty yet lagery. Warming up there is a great dark crystal malt aroma and taste. Bar a little metallic twang to begin with, this turns into a fine pint.

Bottle at home. Dark brown pour, thin off-white head. Aroma is roasty, some faint red fruits, bread, Czech hops and rye. Flavor is slightly bitter, somewhat sweet and nice full bodied roasted malts. Decent brew.

Nice black beer which is not overdone. Light bodied and a good summer quaffer. Low head and low carbonation.

50cl brown bottle labeled in German from Vienna grocery store. Pours a clear dark mahogany with fading white head. Big "chocolate" aroma. Medium body, noticeable carbonation. Slightly dry dark malts flavor balance. No molasass or too much caramel dominant flavor common to most Czech dark beers. Light hop bitterness up front combines with carbonation to mitigate overly sweet flavor balance. Otherwise clean lager. OKAY.

Bottled from waitrose. Really really dark with a delicate tan head. Sweet caramel, molasses and malt aroma. Flavours malty chocolatey, ever so slightly astringent. Lasting smokiness on the aftertaste. Not generally a lager fan though I like the genuine Budvars and this in particular. Really good and one of the few ’dunkels’ on sale around these here parts.

flying_pig (338) - SCOTLAND - NOV 23, 2011
Bottle (500ml):
Some dark malts and hint of coffee to kick things off with followed by some grain around the middle of the drink. It smells quite rich with a little bit of sweetness plus there is a sort of nutty aroma at the end.
Dark mahogany brown with a large, tanned brown head. It’s foamy with good retention.
Some nice dark malts to begin with that aren’t too strong and seem to be well balanced with the vanilla and chocolate flavours that follow it. There is a subtle sweetness to the beer and it is rounded off with a hint of coffee and more mild malts.
Smooth and medium bodied with a nice amount of carbonation, the beer has a nice feel to it & is easy to drink. It is pretty well balanced too.
Well balanced, iIt had a nice look and feel to it & again is a beer I would go back to if I could find it more easily.
