2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
[Draught, Great British Beer Festival] Hints of chocolate and faintly musty, smoky malt, but not much in the aroma. Dark ruby in colour, with a thin, ivory head, though I suspect the head may be down to the way it was poured.
A sweet, caramel flavour, with hints of chocolate and some maltiness, but very thin-bodied. I was expecting more from this, to be honest, given the brewer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
[on tap in Czech Republic]
Almost black, reddish caramel with a lacy, beige cover. Sweet malt and coffee fill the aroma, leaving no room for hops, but some hazlenut notes. Toasty malt flavour with a blend of malt and hops bitterness that linger. Toasted toffee. Light to medium body and fairly dry. Medium carbonation.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This was billed as Budvar Black lager when I had it, but I presume its the same beer. Also, as this was at the CAMRA London Drinker Festival, it was dispensed by air pressure to qualify as "real ale". I think the bar staff were struggling with the equipment, because it poured with a massive head. Once it settled down a bit, the aroma was smoky and roasty. The malt was joined by hints of licorice and chocolate on the palate. Some soft bitterness coming through too. Reasonably full-bodied. Nice.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAY 3, 2005 Couleur caramel avec reflets rouge rubis.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Tapped. Dark red colour, large beige foamy head. Malty, a bit bitterish aroma with weak hints of plum (?). Roasted flavour with hints of malt and barley. The roast grows in the finish. Not that much aftertaste.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
50 cl bottle. Dark brown with long lasting tan head. Enticing aroma of prunes, malt and some chocolate. Flavor is malty with notes of cocoa - maybe a wee metallic and yeasty in the finish. Thinbodied.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark nut brown, small brown head. Aroma has fruits: flowery hops, trefoil, menthol and hints of roast. Refrshing with flowery hops. Oily hoppy and chocolaty aftertaste. Much better than "normal" Budvar.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: OCT 7, 2006 (Bottled) Clear, dark cola color with a foamy, tanned head. Burned-roasty, caramely aroma with ashiness, and faint coffee and licorice hints. Quite roasty and ashy, very clean and straightforward flavor. Pretty light-bodied and carbonated, but reasonably refreshing, neutral, roasty-ashy palate. A very easy, clean and straightforward, yet not completely tasteless dunkel.
(Draught, was 5-4-6-3-12=3.1) Dark reddish brown color with smallish head and some lace. Sourish, earthy and malty, caramely aroma. Somewhat roasted-malty flavor with some chocolate. Not very sweet, balanced but a bit dull. Light to medium-bodied, very easily drinkable, typical carbonation. Quite an OK brew, but nothing memorable.
