We set out to craft a beer that could only be made in Houston - something that couldnít be replicated anywhere else on the planet, even in a laboratory We smoked our malt at Beaverís, Goode Company and Rockwellís Tavern up in Cypress, and blended those malts as the base for a strong scotch ale. Houstonís BBQ scene is literally infused in the malt of this beer.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium well retained, light beige head, with very extensive lacing, over a clear, dark amber (SRM 18) body......nose is dried fruits, with plum, fig, raisin tones, minimal hops, light smoke, ethanol.....taste is slightly sweet, with dried fruits including plum, raisin, finishing with alcohol and smoke.....mouth feel medium, slightly sticky, alcohol burn present, carbonation low. The malt back bone is light and not in absolute ascendancy, resulting in the alcohol and smoke being too apparent. The malts need more depth in all phases, to result in a beer more appropriate to style. BJCP 7/3/12/3/6

Bottle share. Thanks Dan!! Snifters. Pours a dark brownish orange. One finger white head. Some lacing. Interesting aroma of peat, very slight smoke, (unlike a rauchbier), caramel, roasted malts. Taste similar with roasted malts, some peat, very hint of smoke, and slight booze. Medium body and carbonation. Not bad.

Smoky brown color. Decaying, dense tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, malt and chocolate. Its not very smoky. Its more caramely and peaty smoke like a scotch ale.

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2013 The aroma is malt forward - roasted malts with hints of nuts. Pours a clear coppery-brown with a thin white ring and no lacing. The taste is moderately sweet. Hints of smoke, grain, biscuit, and candi sugar. Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. A viscous mouthfeel. Overall, sweet but drinkable. Would probably pair well with the right food.

Sample at Petrol Station. The beer is a slightly murky brownish-amber color with a medium light beige head that dissipates slowly to a wispy film. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and fruit. Medium-bodied with flavors of smoked malt, toffee and hops. The finish is peaty with an earthy malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Opaque orange brown with small light brown foam head. Aroma is kind of hard to place, almost nonexistent. Taste is smooth, bit sherry like. Long lasting aftertaste. (Houston 201310) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Caramel notes, smooth and sweet, the smokiness is in the finish. A fine Scotch ale, one of the better beers of that style that Iíve had.

Bottle:   Deep reddish caramel, moderate foamy sandy head, nice lacing.   Sweet bready start, caramel, biscuity, but not that heavy.   Hard to believe this is 9%.   Aroma is muted,   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Very little smoke.   Stale caramel and bready maltiness on the finish, a little biscuity, with only a touch of smoke.   A very moderate and middle of the road beer.   Nothing off about it tho.
