This traditional India Pale Ale was first produced in 1987 for a customer going through a divorce. Alimony was one of the first craft IPAs and gained cult status after articles appeared in Newsweek and Playboy. Brewed with an abundance of hops from the Pacific Northwest, 70 IBUs and 6.8% ABV. ďItís irreconcilably different.Ē

12 oz bottle. Pours a nice copper color, which, frankly, is the best thing about this beer. My mother used to say if you donít have anything nice to say, donít say anything at all. So I wonít.

Bottle gift. Not too bad. Mild notes of caramel malt and pine. I donít need all my IPAíS to pack a punch , but this was lacking something.

Bottle. Caramel malt and pine/grapefruit peel aroma. Dark amber with small head. Moderately sweet caramel malt and moderately bitter grapefruit peel flavor. Good body. Okay - might have been something special when there were only 5 IPAs available.

Bottle: Hazy, brown-amber with a small, creamy, tan head. Resiny ,slightly spoiled fruit aroma. Taste is dry, resin, old orange-peel, biscuit. Very dull and stale feeling.

12oz bottle into a Corsendonk tulip glass on 5th June 2016 while on holiday in California. Dark orange with a copper hue, the head an off-white affair. Hop forward in both the nose and taste, piney with a slight citrus leaning. OK, but no world beater.

"The times they are a-changing." - Bob Dylan The year was 1987. Somewhere between the pages of big-haired centerfolds, Playboy magazine a named certain West Coast craft brew called Buffalo Billís Alimony Ale the "Bitterest Brew in America." Fast forward to 2016. Playboy is nixing nude pictorials, and Alimony - weighing in at 70 IBUís - is a far cry from Americaís bitterest beer. Countless IPAís, from the West Coast and other regions, have upstaged its hoppiness. The hophead in me knows one of the those changes is for the better. The horny teenager who haunts the corridors of my brain isnít so sure about the other thing. Pour is darker than the usual shade of IPA orange; more like an amber/copper color. Aromas of caramel, rubber/latex, and butter. Again, not very IPA-like by the modern definition. The discrepancies continue with the taste. Mild flavor, malty, mellow. It does get bitter as it warms. Itís a medium body with a creamy feel. The knife-wielding brunette bombshell is an appeal to a time with curvaceous pinups and femme fatales worthy of Billy Wilderís Double Indemnity. Yet, lovers of the bitter, hop-forward, and innovative will understand one truth, harsh though it may sound: some nostalgia is bullshit.

Bottle. Clear amber pour, with an off white head. Raw grain, sugar, grass clippings, notes of citrus, cardboard, and caramel. Not interesting at all, but I guess itís partially drinkable.

Pour is a dark tan with a thin head. Aroma is malt. Taste is thick malt and light bitters. Finish is warm.

Orange amber color with a small lid of beige bubbles. Aromas of pale to toasted malt with a candy orange backdrop. Some grains and near burned grain bitterness. Like alimony, not real smooth. 6/11

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Clear copper with no head and very little lacing. Looks flat except for the edges of the beer. Hop aromas come through, but itís a struggle. Hard to identify exactly which hop aromas are there. More of a bready malt smell. Some bitter hops at the front, but a sharp, nutty flavor from the malt immediately follows. The hops donít come through in the flavor. The finish is bitter, but more unclean than appealing. Medium bodied with sharp carbonation. Much more than I anticipated, given the lack of a head. Not terrible, just not great. Very average IPA.
