THOUGHTS: Pretty bland compared to the current norm, but this must have been a real shocker in the 80s. Definitely a beer first and then a pumpkin flavored beverage second. Almost more of savory pumpkin flavor than most. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a light, orangey amber with nice carbonation and an average, slightly off-white head that mostly diminished and left virtually no lacing. The aroma contained light caramel; very light hops; hints of brown sugar; hints of pumpkin pie spices; and a cross between fruity and vegetal pumpkin. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and slightly bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet, lightly bitter and slightly sour with a short duration. There was light caramel malt, sour and vegetal pumpkin, sweet an fruity pumpkin, and slight pumpkin pie spices (if any spice stood out it might have been ginger). The light to medium body was watery and then dry with fizzy carbonation and a dry finish.

Poured from 12 ounce bottle purchased at Whitey’s Wine and Liquor as part of a mix six pack, tasted on October 11, 2013--review from old notes. Cloudy amber/yellow color, pretty strong pumpkin aroma with some spice notes, moderate pumpkin/spice flavor with enough bitterness to keep things from getting off kilter. Not bad at all but seems to have lost something since I first tried it a few years before this try.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle today. A: Cinnamon, brown sugar, vanilla, and sweet pumpkin pie filling. It smells good, not like a spice bomb. A: Clear red/brown body. 1/2 head that stays. T: Pumpkin pie filling and cloves dominate. Vanilla is subtle. P: It’s way too carbonated and thin. O: The taste is disappointing. I normally like pumpkin beers, but this is a mess. Drain pour.

12 oz single bottle from Wilburs, into a pint glass. Reddish amber and pretty clear appearance with one finger of khaki colored foam. Aroma of pumpkin spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, toasted grain, allspice and clove. Similar flavor, typical pumpkin and fall spiciness with mild sweetness and light bitterness. Light to medium body, a little thin with a crisp feel and a spiced finish. A little over the top, as are most pumpkin beers. Pretty straightforward but fairly easy to drink overall. Pairing: Phish: Split Open and Melt -> Buffalo Bill -> Makisupa Policeman -> Rift, from 10/29/94, Spartanburg Memorial Stadium, SC (21 years ago today)

Pours a clear coppery color with off-white head. Roasted pumpkin, malt, and some squash notes on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with more vegetal pumpkin than I like.

A bit of vegetal pumpkin with cinnamon and cloves in the aroma from a fairly dark amber body with tan head. Cloves and nutmeg kick into high gear along with cinnamon in the taste and a brown sugar sweetness. There’s a sour note that comes up mid-palate that’s distracting and I’m guessing that comes from the pumpkin. Body is a bit thin and watery. Finishes with a lot of spice but not overwhelmingly so. The first commercial pumpkin ale I can remember, but not the best, and also not the worst.

Bottle pour. The beer is a darker copper color. Clear. White head. The aroma has nice levels of nutmeg and a good sweetness. More mild spice. Good graham cracker notes. Medium body and medium carbonation.

12 oz bottle. Sweet autumn aroma. Poured a slightly unfiltered deep amber color with a beige head and nice head retention. Taste of cinnamon, spice, pumpkin, and clove. Average carbonation, medium body. Slightly unpleasant lingering spice on the palate in my opinion. All in all though, one of the best smelling pumpkin beers around with a not too shabby flavor to boot. Cheers

Pours two fingers of head on a dark body. The aroma is brown sugar, smoke, pumpkin and milk. The taste is bread and mild spice. The texture is thicker and smooth. Nice.
