This California Strong Ale was first brewed in 1986 and gained notoriety appearing in Newsweek Magazine. Brewed with a variety of hops from Tasmania, Australia, and Washington state, it has a smooth malt character with a hint of sweetness and a fruity aroma. A favorite at the Hayward Brewery… 8% ABV.

Pours a dark orange with an off white head an aroma of caramel and malt. Tate is of caramel, malt, bittering hops, and light yeast with a bitter finish. Pretty average ale

Squat bottle from Capone’s. Pours turbid pumpkin colored with 1-finger frothy off-white head. Nose is floral and hoppy, with some perfumy spice. Tastes hoppy, a bit funky, spicy, peppery, with some pretty heavy malt notes.

Orange caramel brown with just a thin white head. Aroma smells like spiced cider, and taste is not far off, with spicy cinnamon notes and relatively high degree of estery sweetness. Nothing about this seems "hoppy" to me, but it’s a nice drink.

Pours a cloudy copper/amber color with a medium white head. The aroma is a sweet malt of honey with a hint of citrus. There is a light sweetness and bitter. The body is light with a thin/creamy texture and the finish is somewhat bitter. Nothing really special about this beer at all.

Slightly malty and syrupy mouthfeel, something I was not expecting. For some reason I thought this was an IPA. Flavors of bread and banana are complimented by a hoppy finish. I’m not in love with this beer, but I think it has earned a second try.

Bottle. This beer pours a hazy amber with a decent sudsy head and very little aroma. A little dish soap and honey is about it. Flavor is interesting, but not at all what I was expecting. It’s definitely spicy... kind of a zing to it that is almost like coriander or maybe even fennel. It holds a fair amount of sweetness and is a little bit sticky on the palate. Finish is spicy with a little residual sweetness.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy orange-apricot color with a medium sized foamy orange-white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was dry, minty, herbal, a bit earthy and had a piney presence. The flavor was tart and tangy mint, perfume, herbal hosp and faint citrus. Medium length tart and tangy min and perfume finish. Medium body. Ok.

Bottle from Total Wine in Boca Raton, FL. Pilsner glass. Deep amber-orange color with significant haze. Very thin white head. Little lacing. The aroma is grass, apricot, smoke and bread. (Not sure where the smoke comes from but it seemed smoky to me.) Taste is very malty with dark fruits and floral notes. It also has kind of a smoke, roasted flavor on the finish. Dry finish as well. Maybe my palette is off today. A little odd, but not too bad.

the devil on a sunday. from a bottle garnered from vintage. clean smell, somewhat volatile. nice thik creamy head. fades to a cloudy pale looking thing. first taste is rather alky. comes across like medicine. seems like much more than 7%. aroma goes somewhat metallic. I know buffalo for the milder beers, somewhat surprising. nasty nellie from the pirates. for a strong beer, it does have decent carbonation sizzle. overall, not impressed

Buffalo Bill’s Tasmanian Devil. Serving: 12 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a nice amber orange color with a fluffy head. The nose is mostly citrus with nice orange notes. The flavor has a solid caramel and malt backbone with a good orange and touch of grass. Medium mouthfeel with a medium finish. I was surprised to see this as an English Strong Ale. I was guessing IPA the whole way.
