Commercial Description:
In the brown ale category, this malty beauty shows its local spirit with a distinctive maroon tint. With an intricate balance of both chocolate and caramel malts and an abundance of premium hops, this beer is extremely complex with a very smooth aftertaste.

on tap-pours a light brown head and copper color. Aroma is sweet medium malt-chocolate, citrus. Taste is sweet medium malt-chocolate, citrus-orange. Just beyond light body. Nice. Close to a mild with some chocolates notes. Easy.

Sampled at the Virginia Beer Festival. I appreciated the blatant pandering to the VA Tech crowd with the name. Medium brown. Lightly nutty and citric hop aroma. Not much flavor, just sort of vaguely nutty malts, not hoppy like I had anticipated from the aroma. OK though. As a side note, this ended up being my 2100th rating!

Draft: Slight metallic aroma. Light bronze color, clear. Grapefruit and piney flavors with more of the latter at midpalate. Subdued caramel on the palate. A healthy amount of hops in a brown ale.

Served on draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear copper color with a medium head. Good head retention and fair lacing. Malty aroma with caramel and toffee notes. Taste is bitter hops, toffee, brown sugar and a vegetal finish. Medium bodied.

Pours deep amber into the glass, with a wispy head that leaves trace soapy lace. Aroma of copper and malts. Interesting flavor combo of caramel malt, metallic notes, slight citrus and earthen bitters (the latter 2 close the finish).... just out of whack in the integration dept. Round mouthfeel that is somehow thin on the palate. Just needs tighter integration, but not bad overall. Feels like a young recipe, but shows promise.

Draught at the brewhaus, #439. Dark copper pour with small head and decent lacing. Malty aroma and flavor. Smooth finish. Decent brown.
